[Sigia-l] site mapping a live site

not sure what your reason is for wanting to generate a
site map, but if it's for the purpose of
updating/defining an information architecture (i.e.
creating an IA site map), you will likely not find a
site map with 2000 pages useful
(if this is for a end user-facing site map, the story
is a little different) - the site map that is
generated by these tools include every instance of a
template that might appear in an IA's site map - so if
you've defined a template for, say, a type of product,
and there are 1000 of those products on the site,
you'll get 1000 little page icons in your site map -
not very useful. Personally, I've found generating a
site map of an existing site (no matter how large)
manually to be faster, more reliable, and therefore
also more useful - remember, even if the tool you're
using generates something that is reasonably ok,
you're still going to need to tweak it, which might
take you just as long as creating it by hand
I use the org chart tool in Visio - which allows me to
generate IA site maps quickly and/or update them
quickly as needed
