Someone in my family designed the voice synthesis chips to be used for
dashboard and cruise control in GM cars, more than a decade ago. Technically
they worked. Practically, the GM lawyers nixed the whole thing for fear of
legal liability concerns.

Ironically, the same person went on to design voice synthesis chips for the
then emerging cellphone industry and, later, the original Bluetooth, which
now seems to be used to control various car devices.:-)
