A Birmingham-based utility company is looking for a contract usability engineer
to help redesign the parent company website and two subsidiary websites. The
candidate will be available to work onsite at the customer location in
Birmingham, AL as needed (~35%). The estimated start date is November 1, 2003.
Overall Responsibilities
- Create a project plan that addresses usability needs for the project based on
customer requirements, budget, and priorities.
- Conduct onsite meetings with key stakeholders and executive sponsors.
- Conduct front end analysis, interviewing, requirements gathering / validation.
- Develop information architectures and taxonomies.
- Design clean, consistent Web page interfaces in concert with the in-house
graphic artist.
- Collaborate with the project team, customer, and users.
- Create prototypes
- Plan and conduct field usability tests with the proposed prototypes.
- Summarize test results, and make appropriate design changes.
- Provide help content as needed to enhance usability of applications.
Qualifications:
- MS in human-computer interaction or closely related field
- 3 or more years as a usability engineer in software/web development
- Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills
- Experience conducting user research and usability testing, with the ability
to translate findings into design decisions
- Practical knowledge and experience in usability engineering principles and
methods and familiarity with various prototyping tools and techniques
- Willingness to travel
The final deliverable will be a design document containing functional
templates/wire frames which will serve as the site blueprint for in-house
graphic artists, web developers, and HTML authors. The templates should define
purpose, navigation, general layout, buttons/links, content, functionality, and
business rules for each page.
Candidates should be prepared to show examples of previous work, including user
research documents, usability test plans, wire frames, and interface design.
