I think your question has been answered: arrows aren't the right symbol - up
or down.

I struggled with this on my personal Website. Assuming alphabetical is the
type of sorting you're looking for, I think your best bet is one of these:

AB   /  BA

ABC  /  CBA

AZ   /  ZA

A..Z /  Z..A
