[Sigia-l] UML - still not fit for the UCD?

IBM has recently done some workshops and presentations on their new UCD
process they call User Engineering.
http://www-3.ibm.com/ibm/easy/eou_ext.nsf/Publish/1996

It extensively uses UML as the notation of choice for documenting their
findings and requirements.

They feel that UML can be used as a bridge between Designers, UCD
specialists, business analysts and programmers.

To get specifically into how they use UML look at:

Objects, Views and Inter-action Design (OVID)

Delivering expected value to users and stakeholders with User
Engineering

After going to a few presentations on User Engineering some of the
things that stand out to me as issues are:

- No one has as many people as IBM suggest be on a User Engineering
team. It's like 8 or 9
- The amount of documentation that they suggust you generate is way to
much. Unless you have 9 people I guess.
- Through a system of design targets and measures they add a ROI
component to their process. Although compelling in a presentation after
I looked at it more closely I found their numbers kinda flaky.

I kept asking about how this will tie into Unified Process know that IBM
owns Rational but no one would really tell me. I guess use cases could
be reused but I think there should be more interation then that. Some
people that I have talked to say that it could be a replacement for UP
but User Engineering doesn't go into deals of system architecture.

Ask yourself these:

If UML disappeared tomorrow, just how badly IA/ID/UX professionals miss
it?

Is there anything better than UML to convey the intent of the design
team to the programming/production team?

For whose benefit was UML concocted?
