Hi Marianne,
I mentioned earlier in this thread that Derek's characterization of modern
library education in terms of "librarianship" is an old viewpoint; we
transitioned to "library and information science" education quite a while
ago. Of course, now some universities are moving on to the I-School concept,
which will further enrich educational opportunities for the various
information professions (including librarianship and IA).
Good luck with your program!

changing. I am currently enrolled at the University of Washington Ischool
for an MLIS and the focus here is far from limited to producing "good
librarians". I am currently taking a class in Community Analysis, offered by
Dr. Karen Fisher, a noted scholar in the field of information research and
analysis. There is also LIS 570 Research Methods which is a core requirement
of the Masters program. [Research as a process from problem definition and
formulation of questions to design, data collection, analysis, and
reporting. Students recognize research opportunities, translate them into
researchable frameworks, design research projects, and implement results in
libraries and other information agencies.]
