But you might not want the similar colours together - what about
complimentary or contrasting colours? An all red room would be a little too
boudoir-esque for my liking.

It is possible this is just a bad example - I would agree that in general it
is likely that you can get close to a single solution in a given context,
but it is not wise to think there is one right answer.
