To cite one historical example: For a very long time the world was
(perfectly) defined by Ptolemic maps. Ptolemy (A.D. 90-168) was the epitome
of scientific spirit, with his substitution of latitude/longitude over the
decorative wind rose. Then the amazing Portuguese went around the Cape all
the way to India and shattered that paradigm. But even as late as 1570, some
of the best printed atlases still depicted obsolete maps of Ptolemy.

Time moves on, even when we can't see it.
