"I've long hated when this aspect of graphic design process is brought
up in discussions of information architecture or ux process....

------------------
I have to strongly agree with Peter here. Even coming from an
advertising design background, my main frustration when working in my
first agency as an interactive art director was that we were supposed to
do exactly what George asked for. Years prior, I was prepped in college
to present three concepts or three visual directions for a client and
'pitch' them, but to present three navigation schemes (often sans full
business/user reqs) as well as three homepage/drilldown mockups... it
seemed lacking of a formal process. And this was in an environment where
we were only designing marketing and interstitial sites.
But that was pre-user centered design (as far as we knew it). Pre-user
research/interviews. Pre-personas. Pre-card sorting. Pre-mental models.
Pre-task flows... Pre-anything iterative. But most importantly,
pre-usability testing.
I think we as uxdesigners do replicate that diverse visual design
thought process George yearns for by iterating our designs through
sequential steps in our design process. Thank God that frustration of
having to 'come up with' three separate, yet targeted, interactive
"experiences" without any time to think (just react) is a thing of the
past. Visual design, as Peter so aptly stated, is a separate process all
together.
