User Interface Designer
Kansas State Universitys (KSU) Division of Continuing Education (DCE) is
seeking applicants for a User Interface Designer for the Information Systems
(IS) Office. The User Interface Designer works closely with the Mediated
Education Director and Assistant Director, Application Development Manager,
other IS staff, and KSU and DCE faculty and staff in the gathering of
specifications; designing, prototyping and building of web application
interfaces; and the development of multimedia projects for DCE and other
units on campus.
Mandatory Qualifications:
* Bachelors degree in related area
* Experience designing and developing user interfaces for dynamic web
applications
* Portfolio that shows graphic design, page layout, storyboarding, and
electronic prototyping skills
* Demonstrated experience in a complicated, fast-paced, IT environment,
including project organization and management and time management skills
* Ability to organize designs and provide information architecture
across entire systems
* Demonstrated experience with hands-on coding and production, including
HTML and CSS standards and their effects on cross-platform and browser
compatibility.
* Experience working with Flash, Photoshop, Illustrator, Toolbook II,
Freehand or equivalent software
* Demonstrated experience applying usability standards and ADA
requirements
* Excellent presentation and verbal and written communication skills
* Experience working in a team environment and collaborating with peer
professionals
* Demonstrated problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
Preferred Qualifications:
* Master's degree
* Ability to identify and recommend emerging multimedia technologies
* Experience working with adult educators to develop quality web-based
educational interactions
* Supervisory experience in a technical environment
* Experience with Unix and CVS or other versioning system
Interface Design Responsibilities
The User Interface Designer will work with full-time and student employees
to develop, test, present, and implement user interfaces, interactive media,
web sites, and multimedia presentation projects for DCE and other campus
units as assigned, and will report to the Director of Mediated Education.
Responsibilities include:
* Conducting meetings and creating documents during the specification
and design phase of the development of user-interface designs for new
features in existing systems or moderate to complex new, web-based
applications. Expected skills include using storyboarding, user modeling,
scenario development, use case definition, task analysis, and other
activities to capture and develop user requirements from faculty and staff,
and defining and communicating user interface design specifications to
application and web development staff.
* Creating prototypes by working closely with web developers and graphic
designers to illustrate the user interface design specifications. The
ability to communicate design ideas through HTML and other visual design
tools such as Adobe Illustrator, Macromedia Freehand, or Flash is also
required.
* Present design ideas by making presentations to faculty/staff,
students, and University guests based on gathered specifications, as well as
demonstrate and promote the developed applications.
* Create and deliver demonstrations and encourage the use of emerging
technologies to enhance web-based instruction at KSU. Excellent interactive
communication skills will be of the highest importance. The successful
candidate must be able to explain technology to a variety of audiences. This
will include training and support of tools and interfaces that are created
to assist instructors in developing educational content for web-based
delivery.
* Co-supervision of the student web development team, including HTML
developers, graphic designers and technical writers, will also be required.
Duties include helping manage and coordinate DCE web development projects,
special projects as assigned, presentation material, and multimedia
projects.

Salary Range: $34,000 - $44,000
