What an interesting perspective.

My 10 year experience on discussion lists has given me the 
impression that the common etiquette is that, if a conversation is 
happening between 2 people and the rest of the room are not 
participating, the conversation should be private.

And that a message sent privately should be answered privately. 
Never should a private message be reposted publicly...
