Just because they don't know the term doesn't mean you should drop it. They
need to be educated. And I'm not talking altruistically. I mean if you're
going to have a meaningful conversation with them, they'll need to know what
they're talking about.

You said it best:

Avoiding the term doesn't give that student a better understanding of the
tools to design a page.

Not in a technical environment. You'd better be working with people whom you
can communicate with. (In fact, it seems to me that's *why* that student
needs an education.)
