So that my earlier email was so brief as to be cryptic. I have sat in many
usability tests, and I've observed users' ability to recognize this
convention varies widely. In tests with more naive users, maybe half clicked
the logo, the others looked for a home button or even hit the back button
multiple times. Sites with a more sophisticated user base have a higher
percentage of logo-clickers, closer to 90%. One test I observed the logo was
not linked and this caused a deep sense of annoyance in the users who relied
on it for navigation.
Overall I would say that across the tests I have seen one could conclude
that the logo is insufficient alone as home navigation but should be use in
conjunction with a home button or link as navigation. it is also a bad idea
to not link the logo, as linking it hurts no one and helps power users.
