I think you give the average user far too much credit.  The average user simply accepts what is presented to them in the default settings of their computer or the website they are viewing.  They are not inclined to play with their settings, even if they know where to look.  They are afraid they will "break" something.
 
In case you are curious, I have done significant observational research into the habits of one average user ever since I married her.

They may not know what DPI or screen resolution stands for. But they know for example that on Windows, there is something called "screen area" in the "Setting" tab of the "Display Properties" configuration. Adjusting "screen area" will affect the resolution.

By playing with various settings, users have indirectly determined the optimal line length for themselves."
