: I am constantly asked by my clients to extend the width of a body of text.
: Are there any rules I can use when laying out text?

All the links eveyone has sent are really good sources. I'd also refer to
"The Yale Web Style Guide" ( http://info.med.yale.edu/caim/manual/ ), within
the Page Design chapter. The main consideration for width definition as
Patrick Lynch defines in this book/website (i have the printed version), is
optimal width for printing, which is something you should consider depending
on the purpose of your website.
