We are talking about a medium of mass communication.  Standardization is a
requirement if it is to be effective and ubiquitous.  If a company came up
with a better telephone that used special interface and carrier technology
that was superior to the current standards but could not operate with other
phones that company, though creative, would die.  You just can't be creative
for the sake of art when billions of people are depending on your work to
fit with the system they have.
