My suggestion is to be explicit in the feebdabck you give
to the user.
For example
You searched for "cat". We found XX matches for Feline
which is the preferred term for cat.
Then you highlight feline to your heart's content.
Also think about placing the thesaurus/CV as a browsing
structure on the site to enforce the terms you are using in
searching.
When I worked at Yellow Pages in Australia, the users did
not understand that they were actually searching the Fast
Find Index at the beginning of the book. We had repeated
requests to see the index.
