Absolutely. It's already happening. OTOH, the inherent problem of
being a specialist is that you need a large enough client
base/company to support that specialty.

I'd hate to see us get into the sorts of status wars that the medical
field engages in. Both specialists and generalists are valuable. It's
just a matter of who's more useful in a particular situation.
And the ability of someone who can see the big picture can be a value
skill. Generals and CEOs are expected to be holistic strategists
(although admittedly few actually really do this).
