I find when starting out and building a new relationship people respond
positively to fixed fees. I base my fees on an hourly rate that I think is
fair, and spend some time carefully scoping a project. As we know doing a
poor job scoping, or letting a project creep leads to a loss of money, but
that can be overcome by careful management.
Overtime as the client gains a trust for the work and timeframes, I shift
them over to a pure hourly rate.
The fixed fee approach also allows you to maintain an higher published
hourly rate, while trimming hours to win the engagement.
