I'll second David's recommendation. "Database Design for Mere 
Mortals" is required reading if you're building any sort of database.

If you're actually doing the work, the author has a follow-up "SQL 
Queries for Mere Mortals." Haven't had a chance to read it yet, but 
it had equally glowing blurbs on the back cover.
