One could easily have a successful career as a programmer simply writing
executable code in a given language (or two). Not all programmers are or
need to be application architects. In fact the vast majority aren't. So
*structural* issues and putting the app in the general context of an IT
architecture are not necessarily the domain of most programmers.

Therefore, before engaging a potential adversary, it'd be wise to find out
if he is a programmer or a software architect. If the former, engaging him
at the level of the issues typically performed by an IA is fruitless. Don't
bother.

If the latter, you will either have an ally (because the guy is interested
in these issues to begin with and wants to work with you to come up with a
worthy product) or an enemy (because he thinks this is his domain and nobody
else's).
