A few people asked me this privately. I am not against doing any of the
other stuff up to the prototype stage. Whatever it takes to get your
thinking going. But you don't have to/need to show them to the client. I do
a huge amount of hand drawing and touch the computer only at the later
stages of the process. That doesn't mean, however, that the client should
necessarily see them.

Prototype gets me to a higher, more intense level of interaction with the
client. It speeds up the flow of information from the client to me. It gets
both of us to the endgame faster than a lot of disparate, piecemeal
deliverables.
