We created a database of 50,000 internet resources in MARC format with
subject indexing using the US Library of Congress precoordinate style of
subject headings. The work averaged 8 1- 12 records per hour depending on
the person doing the work. The task involved finding the resources,
capturing them, we then ran the HTML header through a program to parse the
data into as many of the proper fields as we could in advance. Then we
finished cataloging them by filling in a catalog module from the Data
Harmony XIS (XML Intranet System) and using an assisted indexing system to
suggest the appropriate headings. We worked from the full text and created
a short abstract for each bibliographic record.
