Fostering Online Collaboration Using Wikis

The Course
Many projects that we work on involve some form of collaboration. Your team
members might work in the same office or be around the world. Teams need an
online space and tools that support group conversations, planning, and
collaborative content creation. Existing tools can be cumbersome for
sharing files, annotating them, supporting editorial discussions, and
managing archiving and version control. Find out how wikis can help teams
collaborate and share knowledge. The flexible, self-organizing nature of
wikis and their ease of use make them an ideal tool for creating instant
intranets or web sites, team areas, or library/IT documentation areas. Find
out more about wikis, how some libraries have successfully used them, and
how wikis fit into your collaboration toolbox. Find out where you can set
up a hosted wiki or install your own wiki software to test it out.

Targeted Learners
This presentation is designed for professionals who are interested in
expanding their knowledge of tools for online collaboration. No prior
knowledge of wikis is needed. Familiarity with other online collaboration
tools like bulletin boards, Web logs, or instant messaging would be beneficial.

Critical Learning Questions
    * What are wikis and how are they used for fostering collaboration?
    * How do you navigate a wiki and contribute content?
    * Where can you set up a test wiki using either a hosted solution or
installed software?
