ASIST Chapter Assembly Director

Penny O'Connor
Candidate Statement:
ASIST chapters offer an opportunity for professional growth
close-to-home year-round. Chapters form a special environment for
teamwork in the interest of ASIST members and the ASIST organization. It
is through chapters that many new members and students make their first
contact with ASIST. The Chapter assembly supports chapter leaders,
offers exchange of creative ideas for chapter procedures and projects,
and represents chapter interests in ASIST.

Currently I am ASIST Leadership Development Chair. I have served the
Northern Ohio Chapter in several offices. I have been a Chapter Advisor
and I have served on the Chapter of the Year Jury. As Chapter Assembly
Director I would welcome the chance to strengthen chapters by bringing
together the ideas of ASIST members, the ASIST headquarters staff, and
the ASIST Board. Chapters have done some impressive projects recently,
and it would be an honor to serve.

Beata Panagopoulos
Candidate Statement:
The challenge for Chapter Assembly is make the experience and
leadership skills of its members readily available to all chapter
leaders throughout the year--not just at the Annual Meeting. With the
ASIST web redesign imminent, we are going to have the opportunity to
have one place to go to find membership information, programming
strategies, and organizational tools such as calendars with suggested
timelines and templates for project proposals. I would like to finish
the ambitious work begun by Karen Howell of promoting the needs of
chapter leaders in the development of their own interactive web space.
Another area that I would like to work on is the refinement of the
Chapter awards system. ASIST Headquarters has made it much easier to
submit awards nominations by using its online conference management
system. But there is still work to do in order to make the process of
submission and judging easier and more seamless. Having served in many
capacities on the Board of the New England Chapter, I know how important
it is to get guidance and support from ASIST for chapter management and
development. I would be honored to be able to serve as your liaison to
the ASIST Executive Board and make your voice heard.

ASIST Chapter Assembly Deputy Director

Arne Almquist
Candidate Statement:
Arne Almquist holds a BA, BFA, and MFA in Music from the University at
Buffalo, and an MS in Information Science from the University of North
Texas. While at UNT, he worked in a variety of positions within the
Libraries, starting as a student assistant and moving through the
ranks to Assistant Dean of Libraries. From the period 1989 through
1994, he developed the Libraries' LAN and PC infrastructure, including
one of the largest installations of networked CD-ROMs in the country.
He is currently Associate Provost for Library Services at Northern
Kentucky University where he has been involved in a number of state and
metropolitan efforts at multi-library collaboration.

Amy Wallace
Candidate Statement:
My name is Amy Wallace and I am running for Chapter Assembly Deputy
Director. I have been a member of the American Society for Information
Science and Technology for seven years. These years have been spent in
key leadership positions in the Los Angeles Chapter, including chair
elect/program chair, chair (two terms), and part chair/awards chair (two
terms). Last year my chapter honored me by nominating me for the James
M. Cretsos Leadership Award.
I believe that the chapters are the heart of our society. Chapters
provide members with local contacts, leadership, networking
opportunities, exciting publications, informative websites, and
innovative programs. Chapters bring in revenue, sponsor scholarships,
and grant awards Chapters recruit, mobilize, and help retain ASIST
members. Therefore, chapters need the ability to continually share
their successes and concerns with each other and society leadership.
The chapters need to be supported and used as a resource. It is not
enough to get together once a year and chat, the chapters' voice must be
heard in every aspect of decision making. I hope to represent that
voice.
