Folks

the following votes arent due until after the new year but I thought I would get them out to you because of the holidays ( some light reading while you are on vacation)

comments and suggestion for a vote on the 1st 4 is needed by 01/02/2015
the last one ( the ISO document) is a liaison document so we can only provide comments and not a vote recommendation - its also a large file so ill send it out as a separate email

All other relevant documents are attached to this note

1)  Review of ANSI/NISO Z39.14-1997 (R2009) Guidelines for Abstracts
This ballot is for the periodic review of the published standard ANSI/NISO Z39.14-1997 (R2009) Guidelines for Abstracts. This standard was last reviewed and reaffirmed in 2009.

In accordance with NISO procedures, all review ballots are accompanied by a recommendation from the responsible leadership committee. NISO's Content and Collection Management Topic Committee recommends to REAFFIRM the standard.

As a member of the voting pool, you are required to vote on this ballot (one vote per organization). Please cast your ballot with one of the following voting options:

YES - Approve the Reaffirmation of the standard (comments optional)

NO - Do not approve the Reaffirmation of the standard (comments required)

ABSTAIN from voting (comments are required since members of the voting pool volunteered to join, so an abstention vote requires explanation)

 2) Review of ANSI/NISO Z39.23-1997 (R2009) Standard Technical Report Number Format and Creation

This ballot is for the periodic review of the published standard ANSI/NISO Z39.23-1997 (R2009) Standard Technical Report Number Format and Creation. This standard was last reviewed and reaffirmed in 2009.

In accordance with NISO procedures, all review ballots are accompanied by a recommendation from the responsible leadership committee. NISO's Content and Collection Management Topic Committee recommends a vote to CONVERT TO STABILIZED MAINTENANCE.

Stabilized maintenance removes a standard from the requirement for five-year periodic reviews. It is used for standards that address mature technology or practices and are not likely to require a revision.


As a member of the voting pool, you are required to vote on this ballot (one vote per organization). Please cast your ballot with one of the following voting options:

YES - Approve the conversion to Stabilized Maintenance (comments optional)

NO - Do not approve conversion to Stabilized Maintenance (comments required)

In accordance with NISO procedures, all review ballots are accompanied by a recommendation from the responsible leadership committee. NISO's Content and Collection Management Topic Committee recommends a vote to CONVERT TO STABILIZED MAINTENANCE.

4) Review of ANSI/NISO Z39.48-1992 (R2009) Permanence of Paper for Publications and Documents in Libraries and Archives

This ballot is for the periodic review of the published standard ANSI/NISO Z39.48-1992 (R2009) Permanence of Paper for Publications and Documents in Libraries and Archives. This standard was last reviewed and reaffirmed in 2009.

In accordance with NISO procedures, all review ballots are accompanied by a recommendation from the responsible leadership committee. NISO's Content and Collection Management Topic Committee recommends to REVISE the standard.

Investigation by the Content and Collections Management Topic Committee revealed that the standard should be revised and updated to address issues of lignin, recycled content, and fillers; investigate further testing of how lingin affects permanence; and investigate methods to reveal compliance (re Notice of Compliance section).

If revision is approved, NISO will form a Working Group to update and revise the standard.
If you would like to nominate someone to participate on the Working Group (if the revision is approved), please provide a name and contact information in your comments. NISO Working Group participation is not limited to NISO members.

5) ISO/DIS 32000-2, Document management - Portable Document Format- Part 2: PDF 2.0

This is a liaison ballot from ISO/TC 171, Document management applications, Subcommittee SC 2, Application issues, Working Group 8, PDF for the ballot of: ISO/DIS-32000-2, Document management - Portable document format - Part 2: PDF 2.0.

This International Standard specifies a digital form for representing electronic documents to enable users to exchange and view electronic documents independent of the environment in which they were created or the environment in which they are viewed or printed. The Adobe Systems version PDF 1.7 is the basis for ISO 32000 Part 1. This document is ISO 32000 Part 2 which is a self contained replacement for Part 1 and specifies PDF 2.0. for the full function PDF.


Since TC46/SC11 is a liaison organization for this ballot, we can only provide comments. If approved by TC171/SC2, the standard will proceed directly to publication. If not approved or if the Working Group gets comments requiring substantive changes, an FDIS ballot may be issued.
