The iSchool at the University of Maryland invites highly qualified individuals focusing in the area of Archives, School Librarian, or Youth Services to apply for a tenure-track faculty position. Maryland’s iSchool offers an environment in which research and teaching share the highest priority, colleagues offer and expect collaboration in all phases of academic life, and rich resources support research and teaching.
We seek an individual who can teach both in their specialization and contribute to other aspects of the Master of Library Science and Ph.D. programs and who has a dynamic and innovative research program that is well aligned with our MLS and Ph.D. programs to join a faculty that engages in a broad range of research with the shared theme of information, technology, and people. The ideal candidate will:
Conduct research that aspires to shape the information field;
Craft exceptional educational experiences for students in our Master of Library Science and Ph.D. programs;
Aspire to leadership roles in relevant professional service; and
Thrive in an intellectually stimulating multi-disciplinary environment
The iSchool enrolls nearly 500 students in four degree programs: Ph.D. in Information Studies, Master of Library Science, Master of Information Management, and Master of Science in Human Computer Interaction. The iSchool is home to nationally ranked programs in Archives and Records Management and School Library Media, and is known internationally for its vibrant program of interdisciplinary research in academic and public library innovation, archives and records management, cloud computing, computational linguistics, digital humanities, diverse populations, health information, information policy, information retrieval, interface design, learning environments, and social media. Faculty members conduct individual and collaborative research with partners on campus and beyond; several hold appointments or affiliations in Business, Computer Science, Education, and English. More information on the iSchool is available at http://ischool.umd.edu
This is a 9-month tenure-track appointment, with opportunities for summer teaching and grant-funded summer research. Salary and benefits are competitive based upon qualifications and experience.
Qualifications. Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a related area (or anticipated); demonstrated potential for research excellence; clear potential to attract external support for research; and evidence of effective and innovative teaching. Understanding the application of the specialization’s principles and concepts to practice is desirable. Candidates should show a commitment to bridging research and practice.
Application Submission. For best consideration, submit applications by November 30, 2011. Application materials, including a CV, a letter of interest that clearly describes your primary area(s) of expertise and the specific contributions that you would make to the iSchool, separate statements that outline your research and teaching interests, and three letters of reference must be submitted electronically through the University of Maryland’s online system at https://jobs.umd.edu
