“Information Behavior: Relevance and Beyond”

Abstract:
This presentation will provide an overview of the major Information Behavior models and the changing information environments. Information behaviors include information need, seeking, and use in various contexts. Relevance is a much studied concept of multi-dimensional nature; people use various criteria to make relevance assessments in task situations. The challenges we face go beyond how to implement users' relevance criteria in IR systems.

Brief Bio:
Dr. Peiling Wang holds the title of Professor at the University of Tennessee, School of Information Sciences. She received her Ph.D. in Library and Information Science from the University of Maryland. Her research interests include information seeking behaviors, knowledge structures, research methodologies and methods, data mining, and citation analysis. Dr. Wang teaches courses in Organization of Information, Database Management, Research Methods, Information Retrieval and Information Seeking. She is the recipient of the 2005 ASIST Outstanding Information Science Teaching Award, the 1999 Best JASIST Paper Award, and the 1994 ASIST Doctoral Forum Award.
