New Faculty Join Rutgers SCILS

Rutgers University’s School of Communication, Information and Library 
Studies, is pleased to announce the fall 2004 appointment of two new 
full-time faculty members, Marie L. Radford and Sherry L. Vellucci.

Marie L. Radford has been appointed as an Associate Professor. Prior to 
joining the Rutgers faculty, she was Acting Dean and Associate Professor 
of Pratt Institute's School of Information and Library Science. She 
holds a Ph.D. from Rutgers and an MSLS from Syracuse Univ.  Before 
arriving at Pratt in 1996, she was Head of Curriculum Materials at 
William Paterson University of New Jersey’s Cheng Library. Her research 
interests are interpersonal communication aspects of reference service 
(both traditional and digital), evaluation of digital resources & 
services, cultural studies, and media stereotypes of librarians.  She 
has given numerous presentations at communication and library 
conferences and has published in College & Research Libraries, The 
Library Quarterly, Library Trends, JELIS, and the Journal of Academic 
Librarianship. Her book The Reference Encounter: Interpersonal 
Communication in the Academic Library, was published by ACRL/ALA in 
1999. Her latest book, Web Research: Selection, Evaluation, and Citing," 
was published by Allyn & Bacon in 2002, with the 2nd ed. forthcoming in 
2006. She is active in library and communication associations, including 
the ALA, ALISE, and RUSA. She is past chair of the Library Research 
Round Table, and a member of the program planning committee for the 
upcoming Library Research Seminar III.

Sherry L. Vellucci has been appointed Assistant Professor. Prior to 
joining the SCILS faculty, she was Associate Professor and Director of 
the Division of Library & Information Science, St. John’s University. 
She holds her doctorate in Library Science from Columbia University. Dr. 
Vellucci has received several awards for her metadata research and 
publications, most recently the American Library Association’s Best of 
LRTS Award and the Music Library Association’s Special Research Award. 
She is an internationally renowned conference speaker on the topic of 
metadata and has given presentations in Canada, Italy, New Zealand, 
Scotland, France and Switzerland. Dr. Vellucci serves on the editorial 
board of Cataloging & Classification Quarterly and is the author of 
numerous publications, in the area of bibliographic relationships and 
metadata. She is active in several professional organizations and has 
held high level offices in the Music Library Association and the 
International Association of Music Libraries.
