Workshop: Organization of Web Sites, July 10-11
Do you have a project you've been struggling to get online? Has your
organization's Web site evolved into a multiheaded monster? Has "Web
site developer" been tacked on to your list of job duties?
Our 2-day professional development workshop on Organizing Web Sites will
help you get your site's information architecture straight from the
start, making it easier for you -- and your customers -- to find what
you're looking for.
The organization of a site's content is often an afterthought in the Web
design process, but there are tried and true methods professional Web
designers apply when organizing content to make a site easier to use and
navigate.
The instructors will present both information architecture and
user-centered design methods, including object-oriented design. You'll
learn the pros and cons of each method, when to use it, and how to apply
it. Hands-on exercises will give you a chance to test and apply the
concepts you learn.
Your workshop instructors:
- Susanna Davidsen is an Internet pioneer who developed the first
virtual library on the Internet in 1992. For eight years she served as
director of the Michigan Electronic Library, the state's free online
library service. Her virtual library design continues to be used as a
model today throughout the world. If you've used Yahoo!, you've seen
it. She is currently the managing director of the Internet Public
Library, an online library portal that has helped pioneer online
libraries and virtual reference. For the last 14 years Davidsen has
taught a graduate course in federal government information resources and
policy at the University of Michigan School of Information.
- Everyl Yankee is a usability consultant who has been involved in user
interface analysis, design, and evaluation since 1982. She has worked
in all phases of development of both software and Web-based commercial
applications, including ten years' experience with accessible interfaces
and extensive experience consulting on e-commerce applications. She was
the usability product manager at ProQuest and works with public and
university libraries on usability issues.
Davidsen and Yankee are the coauthors of an upcoming book on
user-centered, object-oriented design due out this fall from ALA
Editions.
Workshop prerequisites: You should have a basic understanding of HTML
programming and should be familiar with the use of Web browsers such as
Internet Explorer and Netscape.
