VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
(TWO POSITIONS-Cataloging Department)
Cataloger for Serials and Electronic Resources (Entry Level) The
Cataloger for Serials and Electronic Resources performs original and
complex copy cataloging, including description and subject analysis of
print and electronic materials that are both serial and monographic in
nature, with a focus on developing expertise in serials and electronic
resource cataloging. Participates in the building and maintenance of
the Librariesí name and subject authority files. All Cataloging
Department librarians work with copy cataloging staff to provide LC
subject headings and classification for copy lacking these access
points, and to provide feedback on difficult copy cataloging decisions.
Reports to the Principal Cataloger.
Qualifications Required: ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent advanced
degree in library or information science. Demonstrated interest in, and
grasp of, current cataloging/metadata issues, as expressed by graduate
coursework and/or practical experience. Ability to work effectively
independently and in teams. Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to
communicate clearly, knowledgeably, and personably, orally and in
writing. Evidence of ability for ongoing professional development and
contribution. Competitive salary commensurate with experience, not less
than $36,000 with required qualifications.
Metadata Librarian (Entry Level) Leads metadata initiatives for the NCSU
Libraries. With the metadata architect, defines metadata needs and
solutions that ensure user-centered access to resources. Provides
expertise for development projects that utilize XML, EAD, FGDC, Dublin
Core, and other standards. Participates in non-MARC text, spatial and
numeric, and image database projects. Coordinates non-MARC metadata
initiatives within the Cataloging Department. Performs some original
cataloging, and participates in staff training and development. Has a
key role in planning and implementing information retrieval systems,
including the current implementation of the next-generation integrated
library system (Sirsi) and MetaStar Enterprise software. Reports to the
Assistant Head of Cataloging.
Qualifications Required: ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent advanced
degree in library or information science. Experience with metadata and
emerging standards, such as XML and EAD, demonstrated in graduate
coursework and/or practical experience.. Experience with relational
databases. Ability to work effectively independently and in teams, and
to provide leadership. Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to
communicate clearly, knowledgeably, and personably, orally and in
writing. Evidence of ability for ongoing professional development and
contribution. Preferred: Two years relevant professional experience.
Competitive salary in recognition of applicable education and
experience, not less than $43,000 for a candidate who meets required and
preferred qualifications; minimum of $40,000 for a candidate meeting the
required qualifications.
