Call for participation and presentations:

Workshop: Philosophical, Historical, Rhetorical, and other Conceptual
Approaches to Library and Information Studies
Time: Thursday, 25 July 2002,  9:00 am - 3:00 pm

The last few years have seen an increasing body of literature that
approaches problems in LIS from a "conceptual" perspective. Though empirical
work, of course, begins with conceptual foundations, what distinguishes
these recent approaches are one of two elements: 1) a widening of
methodological discourse and application from those traditionally assumed by
empirical science, and 2) a critical engagement with the traditional
foundations, methods, and history of the field.

The purpose of this workshop is to assemble scholars who are working with
these "conceptual" approaches so that we may exchange perspectives, unearth
commonalities and differences, and turn what has been a plurality of
individual attempts and works into a more collective dialogue.
The workshop will consist of presentations made by willing participants in
the morning, a break for a provided lunch, and then either group discussions
or breakout sessions, depending on the enrollment and the interests of the
participants.

Participants who wish to present a short paper at the workshop, as well as
participants who wish to merely attend, are asked to contact Ron Day
(ronday at wayne.edu ) by May 31. Those wishing to give a short paper are asked
to send a title and abstract that will be shared with other participants
beforehand. Please also indicate if you have any special needs for
equipment.
