We are granting this year?s award to Robert Montoya of the UCLA Department of Information Studies, based on his dissertation project, tentatively titled, ?Articulating Composite Taxonomies: Epistemology and the Global Unification of Biodiversity Databases.? Montoya's nominating faculty member wrote: "Our field, information studies, is often misunderstood as a field in which technocrats and managers impose standards on data or records for the purpose of implementing tasks that make it easier for people to find and use information or cultural legacy materials. This misapprehension ignores the complex and profound inquiry into the nature of knowledge models, epistemological discourse, and the historicity of these models and discourses across fields, disciplines and professions. Robert Montoya?s work on classification and nomenclature is relevant to scholars and scientists working with the identification and assessment of species viability. Perhaps more importantly for the Information Studies community, his work on classification used in the natural sciences is going to offer insights into the ways classification systems and knowledge organization meet a specific set of conditions in application and use. His dissertation should also be of interest to those working in the history of science, cultural history, bibliographical study, and discourse analysis from a philosophy of knowledge perspective." The award consists of a certificate suitable for framing and $1000 check. Since this award is for ongoing research, other applicants who are still working on their dissertations will be eligible to enter their work next year, and we strongly encourage them to do so. This support is in the form of a small stipend to cover the registration fee and partially cover the costs of travel and living expenses while attending the conference. The students will be reimbursed for their expenses after the conference. All students who get travel grants from SIGCHI must send us a paragraph about their experience and a headshot before they will be reimbursed. You must be a member of SIGCHI before you apply ($19 dues). The objective of IUI's student support is to encourage students interested in subjects related to Intelligent User Interfaces to become active members of the IUI community. To apply, the student should be actively enrolled as a student in an academic institution. Priority will be given to students who are first authors of accepted papers and to participants in the doctoral consortium. Recipients of the stipend are also expected to help the conference organization as student volunteers. The level of support will be determined by the availability of funds and the number of eligible applications. The application should include: 1. Full name 2. Email address 3. The school you are attending, your major, and the country in which the school resides 4. If you will present at the conference, please provide the title of the submission and its type (e.g., research paper, student consortium, demo). Please note if you have submitted but have not found out if your submission has been accepted 5. A short statement describing your research interests and how you wish to benefit from attending this conference 6. The location you are flying from and the cost for your airfare, as determined by the availability of low-cost economy fares for travel to the conference. Please describe any other expenses you expect to accrue, but do not include registration and housing costs, as they are similar for all students 7. A letter of recommendation from your thesis or doctoral advisor (or supervising faculty member) sent separately by email to the Student Consortium Co-Chairs. If you are also applying to the Student Consortium, one appropriately worded recommendation letter can be used for both applications, or you may submit a slightly different letter for each application 8. You must be a member of SIGCHI before you apply The application The SSTG application has two parts: an application form that is submitted by the student; and a letter of support from the student's advisor that the student will attach to his or her application. More information and a link for submitting an application (available a month before the deadline, early July 2016) can be found on the SIGCHI website (http://www.sigchi.org/conferences/funding/student-travel-grant). Submit your single, combined PDF (except letter of recommendation, must be a separate PDF to attach to the application) to: PCS by the deadline! The application round opens in early July, create an account/login to PCS, and look for the submission link under SIGCHI. Deadline for applications for student support: August 1st, 2016. Deadline of applications is August 4, 2016. The complete job description can be found here: https://www.academictransfer.com/employer/UVA/vacancy/34985/lang/en/ Warmest regards Andrea Summary The Royal Netherlands Academy Arts and Sciences (KNAW) , the University of Amsterdam (UvA) , and the VU University Amsterdam (VU) invite applications for three PhD positions for four years. The positions are part of the project 'Re-SEARCH: Contextual Search for Scientific Research Data', which is jointly funded by Elsevier and NWO. Scientific, technical and medical knowledge is built on research data. It increasingly plays a similar role in the social sciences and humanities. Research datasets are either deposited by researchers or automatically extracted from publications. The Re-SEARCH project proposes to create open source search and recommendation solutions for research datasets so as to enable their re-use. Within the Re-SEARCH project, three PhD students will work on search, representation and user aspects of research datasets. These PhD students will be based at different academic locations and the team as a whole will have regular meetings at Elsevier?s Amsterdam offices. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Cities around the world increasingly deploy varied and multiple data streams ? from apps on user-devices to distributed sensor networks ? in order to inform better settings for service provision and resource use. This scholarship is available for a student investigating existing and emergent urban data practices in the context of contemporary smart city agendas. The research will focus on new opportunities for citizen engagement and the development of new models of planning and governance. Additionally, the research will address conceptual and practical challenges concerning practices of data acquisition and utilisation, including growing concerns around the effect of growing surveillance and the impact on privacy. Please spread the word!++ The DATACTIVE (data-activism.net) project at the University of Amsterdam is looking for a PhD student to join the team and contribute to conduct research on data politics and grassroots participation. Apply *with a PhD project proposal* by August 26. ++Job description++ The Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA) of the Faculty of Humanities is looking for a PhD candidate to join the ERC-funded project 'Data Activism: The Politics of Big Data According to Civil Society' (DATACTIVE), with Dr. Stefania Milan as Principal Investigator. DATACTIVE investigates citizens? engagement with massive data collection, seeking to understand how activism evolves in the time of datafication. As datafication progressively invades all spheres of contemporary society, citizens grow increasingly aware of the critical role of information as the new fabric of social life. This awareness gives rise to new sociotechnical practices taking a critical approach to ?big data? and massive data collection, which fall under the rubric of ?data activism?. Data activism takes at least two forms: re-active data activism, whereby people increasingly resist the threats to civil rights that derive from corporate privacy intrusion and government surveillance (e.g., by means of technical fixes such as encryption); and pro-active data activism, whereby citizens take advantage of the possibilities for campaigning and social change that data availability provides (e.g., data-based advocacy). The DATACTIVE project explores how activism broadly defined evolves in the age of big data. We take a critical look at, among others, citizen empowerment through data; civil society?s privacy practices; surveillance and internet activism; governance of data flows and internet infrastructure; open data and civic tech networks. You will join an interdisciplinary team working under the leadership of Dr. Stefania Milan (the Principal Investigator; https://stefaniamilan.net ) and collaboratively examining the emerging dynamics of data activism at the intersection of its social and technological dimensions. We offer a multidisciplinary, interactive and international research environment in a leading department (Communication and Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam currently ranks number 8 in the QS World Rankings). ++Requirements++ The ideal candidate should have: * a demonstrable affinity with one or the combination of the following areas of research: social movements/grassroots activism?s engagement with data, digital technology and citizen participation, datafication and digital citizenship, democratic agency and algorithmic power, social effects of algorithm discrimination, (participatory) governance of data flows; * a Master's, Master of Research, or equivalent degree in one of the following disciplines: sociology, political science, communication sciences, media studies, and neighboring disciplines, preferably with expertise in one of the following fields: social movement studies, digital sociology, sociology of knowledge and/or culture, international relations, governance studies, critical internet studies, critical data studies; * demonstrable expertise in qualitative/ethnographic and/or quantitative research methods; familiarity (or willingness to acquire it) with data processing techniques and digital methods. In addition, he or she should also possess: * a good knowledge of current developments in digital communication technology in the post-Snowden era, and the related socio-technical and policy processes; * a creative mind and an interest to think across disciplines and domains; * strong communication skills, and an interest in building bridges between research, policy and advocacy/activism; * excellent command of English. Familiarity with other languages constitutes an asset; * the ability to work independently as well as in a team, and be responsive to feedback; * the willingness to engage in research collaboration with nongovernmental organizations; * superior organizational skills, including the ability to plan one?s work and meet deadlines. He or she should have an eye for detail, and be available occasionally to work under tight deadlines.
