The session will also serve as a social meeting point to facilitate networking between students, faculty, and professionals. Note: Presenters do not have to attend the conference in order to qualify. To accommodate individuals who cannot attend the conference, we are accepting pre-made video presentations and mailed-in posters. All abstracts, presentation media, and posters will be published on the SIG DL website after the conference. Topics Poster and lightning talk presentation proposals should focus on innovative projects that explore digital libraries through topics concerning community and/or culture, in keeping with this year?s ASIS&T annual meeting theme. Proposals may include, but are not limited to, past research, case studies, and current projects on areas such as social network analysis, linked data, open access and new publishing models, crowd-sourcing, big data, digital humanities, citizen science, or other projects falling within the panel?s theme. (The list is meant to be illustrative, not prescriptive.) Who is Eligible? Submissions can be made as a single author or a group of authors, including collaborations between students or recent graduates from different institutions. Student chapters are particularly encouraged to submit a poster as a group. Authors do NOT need to be members of ASIS&T. However, they must pay for the conference registration fee and related expenses if attending in person. Students and recent graduates are encouraged to consult faculty and professional mentors but should not allow them to be a significant contributor to the content. All research is expected to be purely the students' or recent graduates' work and could include coursework, internship experiences, work-related experience, and independent interests, including theses or other capstone projects. Selection Criteria Up to 10 posters and 5 lightning talk proposals will be accepted for the panel session. Poster submissions must include an abstract of no less than 250 words and a one-page storyboard or mock-up of the poster. Lightning talk submissions must include a two-page paper using the ASIST short paper template available at https://www.asis.org/asist2014/AM14ProceedingsFormat.pdf. Students should indicate whether they will be present at the conference and which format they plan to present. Both posters and lightning talk proposals will be selected based on the following criteria: relevance of topics to the Digital Liaisons session and SIG DL mission, feasibility of presentation within a compressed format, and originality of research. Poster Format The posters will be displayed around the room for the entire session, including during the lightning talks. Students or recent graduates who are unable to attend the session will be allowed to mail in their poster ahead of time or have a colleague put it up for them. Lightning Talks Lightning talks will consist of 5-minute presentations with no more than 10 slides (optional). Presenters may, alternatively, submit a video of their talk. Presenters are encouraged to think creatively while maintaining formal language and respect for the audience. Guest Speakers Dr. Michael Eisenberg (Dean Emeritus and Professor at the Information School, University of Washington) will make the keynote remarks. and Dr. Karen Fisher (Professor at the Information School, University of Washington) will give plenary remarks. Remember - if your student chapter did not submit a report before, you need to do it now - the deadline is Oct. 30. The jury worked very hard to review the submitted reports/nominations and provide their comments. These are already sent back to the nominators. Based on jury?s comments, scores, and deliberations, we are happy to announce the following awards for this year. Student Chapter-of-the-Year The Simmons GSLIS ASIS&T student chapter had another exceptionally active 2013-2014. They also worked on building their membership base through creative outreach and marketing strategies. As one of the jury members put it, this is an in credibly large and active student chapter - they have over 400 members with an increase of 41 in just the last year. They have put on an impressive number of events, both social and technical with the technical events being a mix of practical topics and research activities. They collaborate closely with NEASIST and their events seem to be well organized, well publicized and well presented. Chapter Growth Awards [This is the new award that?s based on % increase in a chapter?s membership over the last year. The awards include free registrations to ASIST Annual Meeting in Seattle.] 1. Catholic University (three free student registrations) 2. Indiana University (two free student registrations) 3. UT Austin (one free student registration) Congratulations to all the winners. We hope to see you all at the ASIST conference in Seattle. Look out for more details on student party! An accounting of this appropriation must be made at the end of each ASIS&T Fiscal Year (September 30), whereupon a new appropriation of $100 will be issued if all the funds have been expended. If only a portion of the funds were expended, the amount expended will be replenished.? Requests for funds are to be made to ASIS&T HQ every year (by Sept. 30) as listed in the checklist http://www.asis.org/Chapters/student_chapter_manual.html#checklist. Funding requests should be sent to the ASIS&T Finance Director, Jan Hatzakos (jan at asis.org) or Executive Director, Richard Hill (rhill at asis.org). Upon request, ASIS&T will set up an account for your student chapter. In the initial year, your student chapter will be credited with an initial amount of $100. Reimbursement requests are to be made Jan Hatzakos (with expense receipts), assuming they are approved and fall within ASIS&T guidelines as outlined in the manual. Since ASIS&T holds your funds, your student chapter will not be required to open a bank account. An accounting of your funds at year-end (Sept. 30) will not be necessary as we will keep a running account throughout the year. You may request your balance or an accounting of your account at any time by sending a request to Jan. In subsequent years (after the first year), a request for funds should only be up to the amount that was spent in the previous year. If you spent $60 for year one, your year-end balance would be $40 ($100-$60), therefore, you would request up to $60 the 2nd year to reinstate your balance to $100. ASIS&T uses a fiscal year which runs from October 1 through September 30. Please refer to the attached Excel spreadsheet template for an example of student chapter accounting. Further questions on this should be directed to Jan Hatzakos (jan at asis.org). IDEASc ? Integrated Doctoral Education with Application to Scholarly Communication ? is a fellowship program designed to further scholarship and practice in the area of scholarly communication by integrating practical experience in the library with the research and classroom experiences that comprise the traditional education of doctoral students. Fellows will be provided with intensive mentoring, wide-ranging opportunities to work and conduct research in scholarly communication, and comprehensive training in pedagogy, curricular development, and in-class instruction. Our efforts are motivated by an awareness of the complex transformations of library roles in the scholarly communication environment and the increasing need to educate future LIS faculty with an integrated understanding of research and practice to meet the needs of future MLS students. Doctoral fellows will receive a stipend of $23,000, health insurance, tuition, travel assistance, and funding for publication in an open access journal for three consecutive years as part of this program. They will also have an opportunity to work in the library with experienced and innovative librarians and with leading faculty studying the diverse range of issues related to scholarly communication. Potential topics of interest include, but are not limited to, digital libraries, scientometrics, intellectual property, metadata, social media metrics, university presses, data curation, digital humanities, scholarly publishing, institutional repositories, and copyright. Additional information can be found on the project website: http:info.ils.indiana.edu/IDEASc Indiana University Bloomington is particularly well-situated to support this proposal given its campus-wide focus on issues of scholarly communication as well as the strengths of both the Indiana University Bloomington Libraries and the Department of Information and Library Science in this domain. This is a time of systemic change in how institutions create, sustain, and provide access to information, and libraries and LIS professionals are uniquely situated to influence the direction of this change. The project will graduate doctoral students who are not only familiar with issues of scholarly communication but will also, as leaders in the field, understand scholarly communication from the varying perspectives of practice, education, and research. Applicants will need to apply to and meet the requirements for the ILS Ph.D. program. Information on the Ph.D. application process can be found on the departmental website (http://ils.indiana.edu/phd/). Students will additionally be asked to send their personal statement, writing sample, and CV/resume directly to Dr. Cassidy R. Sugimoto (sugimoto [at] indiana.edu ). *Applications should be received by January 1, 2015 for full consideration.* -- Cassidy R.
