PhD Studentship in HCIR
- Human-Computer Interaction and Information Retrieval
- University of Nottingham - School of Computer Science - Mixed Reality
Laboratory
See: http://www.jobs.ac.uk/job/AEV429/phd-studentship/

The project is funded by the ORCHID EPSRC Grant, to focus on fundamental
nature of information presentation and interaction in Search User
Interface design.

The mixed focus of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Information
Retrieval (IR) is a growing interdisciplinary area, requiring an
understanding of human information behaviour and search user interface
design. This project will focus on fundamentally splitting and comparing
both the information and interaction provided in search user interfaces,
to understand the impact and value of both parts.

The project has two aims:
	• to provide search user interface design recommendations that promote
better interaction with different types of metadata
	• to help businesses (like online retailers) make effective investments
when building or improving search user interfaces for their users.

Ideal candidates
----------------------
will have strong programming capabilities and experience with
human-computer interaction lab study methods. The candidate must have a
high-grade qualification; at least an upper second class honours degree,
or a combination of qualifications and/or experience equivalent to that
level. This opportunity will provide the successful candidate with a
first-rate, challenging research training experience, in a vibrant and
established computer science school and research lab.

** Due to the nature of funding the studentship is available to UK/EU
citizens. The PhD scholarship is offered for the duration of three
years, starting in October 2012 or January 2013, and will cover full
university fees and a stipend. For student eligibility criteria, please
visit: http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/funding/students/Pages/eligibility.aspx
