Wiegand discovers people love their public libraries for three main reasons: access to practical information; the library as a place; and the transformative potential commonplace stories have for library readers. Because conventional LIS research and education mostly focus on the first, and largely overlook and undervalue the last two, he argues that by not having core courses in "reading and libraries" and "library as place" in American Library Association-accredited programs, and by not conducting much more research on the effects of both, LIS research and education fall short of the profession's needs. Come and join ASIS&T and Dr. Wiegand for what will be a riveting discussion. As a primer, this fascinating article will get you thinking about the salient attributes public libraries provide, not only for information studies, but sociologically and politically as well [more (http://asist.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=de58424ef2e609298efbb4a00&id=5654342618&e=7f14a4fd6b) ]. The intersection between digital information worlds and vulnerable communities is a critical research area within the iSchools movement. There have been concerns about issues regarding bias, social exclusion, cyber-racism, cyberbullying, digital divide, misinformation, and other information sharing hazards in the information experience of vulnerable communities. We seek to bring together a community of researchers and information professionals researching in this important area of our society. We will cover research across disciplinary borders, explore new opportunities for collaboration, and lay the groundwork for a journal special issue centered on vulnerable groups. The iSchools community provides an excellent place to discuss this crucial topic at the intersection of information, society, and technology. We are going to run a workshop titled *?Vulnerable Communities in the Digital Age: Advancing Research and Exploring Collaborations?* *(VCDA2017)* at iConference 2017 to be held in Wuhan, China . Please read through this call if you would like to participate in this workshop and submit a position paper. This will be an interactive workshop to enable the fullest exchange of ideas amongst attendees. The study of information extends beyond any existing field. Our world-class faculty has expertise in a range of disciplines, from computer science, psychology, and engineering to anthropology, history, communications, English, science and technology studies, and more. We come together to study and educate people about the interactions of people and information; the processes of managing and organizing information for meaning and use; and the impact of new technologies and behaviors on individuals, organizations and society. We seek students who can see beyond current approaches to problems, who recognize that information transcends boundaries, and who are comfortable crossing disciplines in search of answers. The greatest challenges facing today's modern information society are to tackle the extraordinary complexity of information, to discover principles and processes to manage its massive scale, and to leverage it to enhance our lives. We seek the best and brightest people who thrive on challenges: * People dedicated to creating new forms of information systems that can augment human and organizational capabilities * People committed to exploring the human and technological principles and processes that underlie information complexity * People seeking to understand human-computer interaction, from interacting with mobile devices, to systems in homes, organizations, and governments. * People energized by a vision of a diverse society where access to relevant information is not a luxury but a requirement * People appreciative of the importance and challenge of preserving and disseminating information on the human cultural record Our faculty and students are passionate about information, and we welcome others who want to join us in helping to forge a better information society.
