From tjg68 at drexel.edu Mon Feb 15 09:33:01 2016 From: tjg68 at drexel.edu (Tim Gorichanaz) Date: Mon, 15 Feb 2016 09:33:01 -0500 Subject: [Siguse-l] What role can the iSchools play in overcoming social divisions? - An iConference session Message-ID: How can the iSchools inform social trends, even outside technology? Join the discussion in this interactive iConference session! *Information aspects of cultural and political divisions: * *CS/IS iSchools and Bishop's Big Sort* More and more, Americans choose to live, socialize and work with people like themselves. The ways in which people interact with information, among other dynamics, can perpetuate this self-sorting. The "Big Sort" has received much attention and is generally seen as detrimental. Still, ideas for reversing the trend are few and far between. Because information technology has been implicated in the Big Sort, an international expert in public policy recently challenged scholars in combined information?computer science programs to work toward a solution. In this provocative Session for Interactive Engagement, scholars from CS/IS iSchools will lead participants in meeting the challenge. Hear the panelists' ideas, vote using your cell phone during the session, engage in lively debate... and help direct the iSchools in partnership with society. The gathering, "Mapping the Positive Turn for Information Science," brings together scholars, students, and practitioners to discuss current research around positive information phenomena, that is: information behaviour and practices in everyday life and leisure settings that are deemed upbeat and non-problematical. Our purpose is to further discuss this research area, review the literature, and connect with developments in the other fields. We also aim to fortify a community of practice and seed collaborations for the future. The session includes a keynote by Dr. Robert A. Stebbins, architect of The Serious Leisure Perspective and author of Leisure and Positive Psychology (2015); short statements from leading researchers in this domain; and ample time for group discussion. Additional information is available at the Workshop website. We believe your contribution to the conversation is important and hope you will join us. Of note, early registration rates for the iConference have been extended to February 1st. The Workshop costs $75.00 on top of standard registration fees; details are at the iConference website. Organizers Jenna Hartel, PhD, Associate Professor, Faculty of Information, University of Toronto Rebecca Noone, BA/MMSt, doctoral student, Faculty of Information, University of Toronto Abstract Visual research methods are hot across academe. In any visual research design, data collection is relatively easy compared to the more complicated task of analysis. Therefore, this half-day Workshop focuses critical attention on visual data analysis. The session is intended for three audiences: 1.) those who wish to be guided in advance through their own original visual research project that is analyzed at the Workshop; 2.) scholars who already have a visual data set that has yet to be analyzed; and 3.) people with a general interest in visual research methods. These three groups will convene at the iConference in Philadelphia to learn and practice five visual analysis techniques, namely: compositional interpretation, content analysis, thematic analysis, pictorial metaphor analysis, and conceptual analysis. The session will be run by Jenna Hartel, an early adopter of visual methods in information studies, creator of the iSquare Research Program, and a specialist on visual data analysis. The event concludes with recommendations from an artist on ways to disseminate the results of visual research via traditional and non-traditional formats and channels. In a collaborative environment, all participants will be able to voice questions and concerns about the visual analysis process and advance their own visual research projects; further, the get-together will seed a community of interest for the future. With the help of the computational intelligence, these digital ecosystems can exhibit new self-* properties (such as self-management, self-healing and self-configuration) environments, thanks to the re-combination and evolution of its "digital components", in which resources provided by each entity are properly conserved, managed and used. The underlying web-based resources mainly comprehend big data management, innovative services, smart and self-* properties platforms. Due to the multi-disciplinary nature of digital ecosystems, they are highly complex to study and design. This also leads to a poor understanding as to how managing resources will empower digital ecosystems to be innovative, intelligent and value-creating. The application of Information Technologies has the potential to enable the understanding of how entities request resources and ultimately interact to create benefits and added-values, impacting business practices and knowledge. These technologies can be improved through novel techniques, models and methodologies for fields such as big data management, web technologies, networking, security, human-computer interactions, artificial intelligence, e-services and self-organizing systems to support the establishment of digital ecosystems and manage their resources. The International Conference on Management of Digital EcoSystems (MEDES),previously named "The International Conference on Management of Emergent Digital EcoSystems", aims to develop and bring together a diverse community from academia, research laboratories and industry interested in exploring the manifold challenges and issues related to resource management of Digital Ecosystems and how current approaches and technologies can be evolved and adapted to this end. MEDES 2016 calls for full papers presenting interesting recent results or novel ideas in all areas of Emergent Digital EcoSystems. At the same time, the conference calls for short papers presenting interesting and exciting recent results or novel thought-provoking ideas that are not quite ready, and preferably include a system demonstration. Topics ------- MEDES 2016 seeks contributions in the following areas: - Digital Ecosystem Infrastructure - Data & Knowledge Management - Computational and Collective Intelligence - Semantic Computing - Big Data - Services - Trust, Security & Privacy - Software Engineering - Internet of Things and Intelligent Web - Cyber Physical Systems - Systems of Systems - Social and Collaborative Platforms - Human-Computer Interaction - Open Source - Applications (Logistics, Energy, Healthcare, Environment, Smart Cities, Digital Humanities, Robotics, etc.) - Complex Systems and Networks Paper Submission ---------------- Submissions must be in an electronic form as PDF format and should be uploaded using the conference website. The submitted paper should be at most 8 ACM single-space printed pages. Papers that fail to comply with length limit will be rejected. Submissions will be peer-reviewed by at least 3 peer reviewers. After the preliminary notification date, authors rebut by evidence and arguments all reviewer inquiries and their comments. Based on the rebuttal feedback, reviewers notify authors with the final decision. Selection criteria will include: relevance, significance, impact, originality, technical soundness, and quality of presentation. Preference will be given to submissions that take strong or challenging positions on important emergent topics related to Digital Ecosystems. At least one author should attend the conference to present the paper. The conference Proceedings will be published by ACM and indexed by the ACM Digital Library and DBLP.
