New technologies, an increasing focus on international and interdisciplinary research collaborations, and a complex, internationalized policy and practice landscape affect the research questions we ask and the research activities we pursue. As researchers, we place our work within a framework of international scholarship and scholarly communication; as practitioners, we explore the nature of services, programs, and organizational vision within contexts of increasing complexity across disciplines and cultural spaces. The research landscape in information science explores a diverse range of populations, settings and contexts; we are a global discipline, connected by shared interests and concerns, and drawn together by the latest technologies. The conference theme points to the increasing need to recognize, explore, and question the social and cultural assumptions of information science as a discipline, and of our chosen research problems and methodologies, in this global context. We seek papers and presentations that address this broad theme, but may also explore strategies for: * Conducting information science research with global partners and collaborators; * Setting research priorities in a global, knowledge-based society; * Building a global evidence base to guide information science practice; * Addressing the challenges of digital and virtual research and practice environments; * Exploring diversity, marginalization and information inequality across borders. We welcome studies that explore any of these issues, or analyses that more broadly address the theme of connecting across borders in information science research. In 2014 CAIS is partnering with the CARL (Canadian Association of Research Libraries) Librarians' Research Institute (LRI) to present the Inaugural Librarians' Research Institute Symposium alongside the CAIS conference. We are pleased to be hosting these events together at Congress for the first time. Call for proposals. Proposals may be submitted in English or French. The conference committee strongly encourages submissions from professional and academic researchers. Types of submissions include: CAIS Papers: 20-minute oral presentations of completed or well-developed projects on topics suitable for publication in scholarly journals. Proposals that report on completed or ongoing research will be given preference. Diverse perspectives (theoretical and applied) and methodologies are welcomed. Proposals should be in the form of an extended abstract (approximately 1000-1500 words excluding references), reporting on research projects, theoretical developments or innovative practical applications. CARL LRI Papers: Participants of the Librarians' Research Institute are invited to identify their LRI affiliation when submitting papers, to be considered for two dedicated program sessions highlighting LRI research projects. These papers will be reviewed by members of the LRI conference panel. Students and practitioners should submit full papers by April 14th to be considered for this award. This is because Smashwords appears to be having some problems in getting books accepted by Amazon. However, if you to the page on Smashwords ( https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/336724) you will see that one of the formats available is labelled ".mobi (Kindle)" - download this version and install it on your Kindle. The Research Forum and Poster Session provide an excellent opportunity to share a wide range of research endeavors and methodologies relevant to science and technology librarianship. The Committee adheres to mentoring principles and utilizes a "blind" review process to select proposals. Submissions for the paper and poster presentations are selected based on the abstract and significant progress by June 2014. Writing style is critical and should be clear, concise, and organized. Abstracts should include some aspects of the research process. Some examples are: * Hypothesis * Problem or purpose - research question or thesis - stated in one sentence. * Literature review in its simplest form - where your project fits with scholarly community. * Target group: people, animals, things etc. and relevant characteristics. * Methodology with essential components * Basic findings, including statistical limitations such as confidence intervals * Conclusions, implications, or applications * Contribute to the advancement of science and technology librarianship. * Demonstrate innovative and original research. * Contribute ideas for positioning librarians to be leaders both on and off campus. Abstracts. Abstracts should total no more than 250 words while addressing the aforementioned criteria. Abstracts should indicate presentation category: Featured, Short Paper, or Poster Session. Be sure to include your name, institution, phone, and e-mail address of all participants (not part of word count). Please indicate whether or not the project was submitted to other conferences, for publication in a journal, published or presented before. Featured Paper Presentations. Our Featured Paper Presentation will be 20 minutes in length and followed by a thoughtful 10 minute critique from a guest commentator, who offers suggestions on how to prepare the paper for publication. Proposals should reflect research that has been completed or initiatives that have already been implemented. At a minimum, significant progress should have been made toward completion or implementation. Short Paper Presentations. Short Papers are 10 minutes in length and may reflect research or initiatives that have been completed or are currently in progress. Short papers may also solicit feedback (5 minutes) on research ideas that are being formulated, outlining possible approaches and asking attendees and the guest commentator for their response. Poster Presentations. Submissions for the poster session are selected from two categories - STS Theme and Open Session. The STS Theme for 2014 is "How can librarians assist with student diversity and retention in the STEM and health science fields at their institutions?" The Open category is for research endeavors or practitioner projects outside the Theme that enhance science and technology librarianship. Human subjects are asked to answer the question "What is information?" in the form of a drawing, generating a compact piece of visual data coined an "iSquare" ( http://www.jennahartel.com/isquares.html). The webinar instructor, Dr. Jenna Hartel of the University of Toronto, has used the method to explore how people envision information (Hartel, in press, 2013a, 2013b). She also applies the approach in classrooms to help students, especially newcomers, theorize information (Hartel, 2014). Whether employed as a research method or pedagogical strategy, iSquares bring information science into the visual Information Age and create a richer multimedia genealogy for our central concept. The goal of the webinar is to help other information scholars and professionals experiment with arts-informed, visual methods and iSquares, specifically. First, the webcast outlines the theoretical framework, research design, and data-gathering specifications to produce iSquares for the purposes of information research. Then the session provides classroom activities and assignments to utilize iSquares for information education.
