Book Title:  New Directions in Children's  and Adolescents' Information Behaviour Research.  By Dania Bilal, Editor. 

[Due to unforeseen circumstances, Dr. Amanda Spink will not be a co-editor of the book; Dr. Bilal is the sole editor.]  The scope of the book covers youth information behaviour from early childhood to adolescence (age 18).

Information behaviour is conceptualized as complex human information related processes that are embedded within an individual's everyday social life. Beginning with a cognitive psychology and social science frameworks, the book will build understanding of the changing nature of children's and adolescents' information behaviours in the digital age. It will provide arguments about the concept of "digital natives" in the realm of children's interaction with technologies, including but not limited to web search engines, mobile devices, virtual worlds, gaming, digital libraries, and social media. Drawing upon social science, educational psychology, sociology, and cognitive psychology theories, the book will also present an integrated and holistic approach in understanding the "diverse" nature of children's and adolescents' information behaviour. The book will focus on youth from early childhood to age 18 who are savvy, novices, privileged, homeless, multicultural, multilingual, and with special needs, among other characteristics.

Authors are invited to submit chapters based on original research not published elsewhere. Chapters should augment our understanding of the new directions, leading edge theories, and models in children's and adolescents' information behaviour, as well as challenge the established views and paradigms of information behaviour studies. In addition, chapters should fall within one or more of the themes described below. Please indicate the theme(s) into which the submitted chapter(s) may fall.

Submitted chapters will be reviewed by Dania Bilal and two external reviewers.  Please submit chapters to Dr. Dania Bilal at dania at utk.edu

I.             Cognitive/affective information behaviour
II.            Information retrieval; Interface design
III.           Diversity in information behaviour
a.            Homeless/privileged/poor/minority
b.            Multiculturalism/multilingualism
c.            Cognitive and other disabilities
d.            Digital natives; digital divide
IV.          Serendipitous/opportunistic information encountering
V.           Digital information literacy
VI.          Collaborative information seeking
VII.         Other themes that are within the scope of the book will also be considered.

SUBMISSION INFORMATION
Potential contributors are invited to submit an abstract or a 1-2 page chapter proposal to the Editor by November 1, 2012 detailing the background, motivations and structure of the proposed chapter. Authors will be notified in short order as to the status of their proposal and sent organizational guidelines. Full chapters should be at least 8,000-9,000 words in length and are due on February 25, 2013. Final revised chapters are due on March 25, 2013.
