FYI... From Dean Brian Cantwell Smith. A sad news for our Faculty and
for the LIS field as a whole.

It is with immense sadness and shock that I report that Prof. Ethel
Auster passed away in her sleep [on thursday June 30].

The loss for FIS and the FIS community is immeasurable. For so many
years, Ethel inspired the intellects and reached deep into the hearts of
generations of students, faculty, librarians, and staff. It is almost
incomprehensible that we will not continue to encounter her passions,
honesty, bravery, and warmth. But her gifts were enduring. We will all
remain infused with her spirit.

It is expected that a funeral service for Prof. Auster will be held on
Monday, July 4. A follow-up note will be sent as soon as details are
available. Information will also be posted on the FIS web site as it
becomes known. http://www.fis.utoronto.ca/about/dean/eauster.htm

I know that I speak for everyone in the FIS community in conveying the
Faculty's profound compassion and deep condolences to Prof. Auster's
family and friends.

Brian
