Hi Everyone,

I'm the Chair of SIG USE for 2004-05. Below are important notes for the
2005 conference regarding the submission of technical sessions/panels,
the symposium, and the brand new SIG USE awards.

If you received this message but are not a member of SIG USE or even
ASIST, please consider joining! SIG USE is the ASIST Special Interest
Group for folks who focus on information behavior (www.asis.org).

[1] 2005 Technical Sessions/Panels

It's time to develop and submit technical session/panel proposals to
ASIST on behalf of SIG USE. The ASIST deadline is Jan 21! As you know,
the conference organizers request that the sessions be sponsored by a
SIG. (Note: the deadline for posters/short paper is Feb 25 and these are
not SIG sponsored.)

At our 2004 Planning Session in Providence SIG USE members agreed to
submit session proposals on 7 topics (at bottom of this email) and
individuals volunteered to organize them.

If you are interested in participating on a particular panel, then
please contact the session organizer right away.

Session Organizers:
1) don't forget to indicate on the online application that it will be
sponsored by SIG USE;
2) feel free to contact the chairs of other SIGs to ask if they'd like
to co-sponsor (chair names are at:
http://www.asis.org/AboutASIS/asis-sigs.html though it looks like they
haven't been yet updated)
3) please send me a copy of your final, submitted proposal so we can
keep track of SIG USE's activities. ASIST specs are at:
http://www.asis.org/am05call.htm

[2] The 2005 SIG USE Symposium

The 2005 theme is 'Connecting Research and Practice on Special
Populations," and is being organized by Anita Komlodi, Dept. of
Information Systems, University of Maryland Baltimore County (Email:
komlodi at umbc.edu). This topic was confirmed at the Planning Meeting.
If you're interested in helping out, please contact Anita or Kevin Rioux
(ksrioux at lis-uncg.net). Otherwise, stay tuned for details on how to
participate in the 2005 Symposium. The tentative Symposium date is
Sat., Oct 29th, 1-6pm.

3) At the 2004 Planning Meeting, SIG USE members agreed to establish
several new awards, including: Best Info Behavior Conference Poster,
Best Info Behavior Conference Paper, the Elfreda A. Chatman Research
Proposal Award, and Travel awards for Masters and PhD students.

We are working hard to get these awards in place for the 2005
conference.

Please encourage folks who might be interested in applying for these
awards to become members of SIG USE because that's the only way that
they can win!

These awards will be funded by the royalities from the forthcoming book
"Theories of Information Behavior," edited by Karen Fisher, Sanda
Erdelez and Lynne McKechnie. To be published in spring 2005 by
Information Today, the book comprises 75 entries by over 80 authors.
All proceeds go to SIG USE.

Please feel free to email me with any questions about any of the above.

Happy Holidays!

Karen
Chair, SIG USE, 2004-05
