CSI Newsletter
News from the Centre for Social Informatics, Faculty of Social Sciences (UL)
Dear colleagues,
Welcome to the first issue of the Centre for Social Informatics (CSI)
newsletter. CSI has more than 20 members and it is one of the largest
research centres at the Faculty of Social Sciences
<https://cdi.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=32275150c7338039c53c72339&id=c806fed5e2&e=2c467bb90f>
of the University of Ljubljana
<https://cdi.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=32275150c7338039c53c72339&id=19586d038f&e=2c467bb90f>.
CSI was established in 2011, with the aim of advancing conceptual and
applied research across social domains where people interact with internet
technologies.
This newsletter will provide platform and an opportunity to share with you
our research activities, recent events, projects, scientific publications
and other news.
Our activities are strongly related to the field of social informatics.
This means that the CSI research team is involved in a diverse array of
projects that study the role of internet technologies in contemporary
society. Accordingly, the CSI researchers have been engaged in areas of
research and expertise dealing with social science methodology, web
services, user experiences, better internet, the internet society, digital
inequality, active and healthy ageing, etc.
Over the years, CSI researchers have made a strong contribution to the
field of web survey methodology. We established the WebSM

portal that has been internationally recognised as the main information
source on the methodology of web surveys and other internet-based survey
methods. We have also developed an open-source web survey tool, 1KA -
OneClickSurvey
<https://cdi.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=32275150c7338039c53c72339&id=43ac6cd81c&e=2c467bb90f>.
1KA provides full support for all stages of web survey implementation and
already has more than 46,000 registered users.
Our researchers also coordinate the Safer Internet Centre
<https://cdi.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=32275150c7338039c53c72339&id=57613d1479&e=2c467bb90f>.
Currently, the project is co-funded by the European Union's Connecting
Europe Facility and the Ministry of Public Administration of the Republic
of Slovenia. The Safer Internet Centre includes three components:
• The Awareness Centre, Safe.si
<https://cdi.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=32275150c7338039c53c72339&id=98bf3c6093&e=2c467bb90f>,
which raises the awareness of children, youngsters, parents and teachers on
how to stay safe online;
• The helpline, Tom telefon
<https://cdi.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=32275150c7338039c53c72339&id=3b3f9c4054&e=2c467bb90f>,
which is intended to assist children and youngsters who are in distress
about the internet and mobile devices;
• The hotline, Spletno oko
<https://cdi.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=32275150c7338039c53c72339&id=2df2971ad0&e=2c467bb90f>,
which enables internet users to anonymously report hate speech and images
of child sexual abuse found on the internet.
Another field in which we are internationally recognised is active healthy
ageing. We have participated and coordinated several projects, dealing with
structural barriers for the uptake of ICT-based services for independent
living of older adults at home. At present, we participate in the Interreg
Europe project, ITHACA
<https://cdi.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=32275150c7338039c53c72339&id=c2175a581b&e=2c467bb90f>,
with the ambition of accelerating the scaling up of smart health and care
innovation that can support active and healthy living and secure the triple
win of economic growth, more sustainable health and care systems as well as
the improved wellbeing of Europe's citizens.
You are kindly invited to read more about our recent work and achievements
as well as to share this newsletter with your colleagues.
Until the next issue,

Recent events
Web Survey Day 2017
Since 2012, members of the CSI have organised the Web Survey Day event that
has over 200 attendees each year. The target audience is the professional
public as well as other web survey users who are interested in advances and
trends in the field of web survey methodology.
This year’s event was held on 21 September 2017 at the University of
Ljubljana Faculty of Social Sciences. The main topics were global trends in
online surveys and the tenth anniversary of the development of 1KA -
OneClickSurvey

Seventh conference on the topic of child abuse on the internet

which enables internet users to anonymously report hate speech and images
of child sexual abuse found on the internet. Working in close cooperation
with the police, internet service providers (ISPs), and other governmental
and non-governmental organisations in Slovenia, the main mission of Spletno
oko is to reduce the number of images of child sexual abuse and online hate
speech.
This year we celebrate the tenth anniversary of Spletno oko
<https://cdi.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=32275150c7338039c53c72339&id=110c275606&e=2c467bb90f>
and according to that, we organised the seventh conference titled “E-child
abuse; yesterday, today and tomorrow”. More than 250 people attended the
conference, which included lectures addressing the topics of sexual abuse
as a criminal offence, interviewing an alleged victim of abuse and taking a
step further in the discussion of online abuses.
