The celebration of GIS Day is an ideal time to reflect on the importance
of preserving geospatial data. Those interested in finding information
and tools on how to preserve and manage geospatial data and related
resources will be pleased to know about the recently-released Geospatial
Data Preservation Resource Center, accessible at the
http://geopreservation.org URL.
The web site enables discovery of resources for education and training,
tools and software, and information on policies and benefits of
geospatial data preservation. It also contains quick links for data
managers, system developers, and researchers. Visitors to the web site
can search or browse for online or downloadable applications, articles,
reports, standards, and tutorials about the preservation and stewardship
of data, maps, and related materials that contain geospatial
information. Resources on the web site also are organized within several
topics relevant to digital data stewardship, including appraisal and
selection, digitized maps, GIS, satellite imagery, and virtual
environments. The development and management of the Geospatial Data
Preservation Resource Center web site is sponsored by the National
Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP) of
the Library of Congress.
