Subject: [CHMINF-L] Call for Abstracts-"Preservation Issues for the
Digital Library," Deadline March 28, 2008
CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
Preservation Issues for the Digital Library American Chemical Society
236th Annual Meeting in Philadelphia PA on August 17-21, 2008
Preservation of the print books and journals has long been a central
focus and activity for scientific research libraries. As scientific
libraries' collections transition from print to digital formats for
information, the community is starting to grapple with the concept of
preservation of digital materials. Digitization of journal backfiles,
print monographs, and even microforms represent the beginning efforts of
preservation in the digital library environment. Obsolete media, both
digital and analog, including floppy diskettes, reel-to-reel audio
recordings, CD-ROMs and other formats represent additional challenges.
Some laboratories and scientists are beginning collaborate with
libraries to help solve the problems of data archiving and preservation
for the vast amounts of data created during the course of research.
This symposium will explore some of the current and future efforts to
address preservation in the digital library.
Possible topics for this symposium may include:
- Simulations of "trigger events" or other disaster planning approaches
in libraries/universities
- Publisher perspectives regarding participation in Portico and/or
CLOCKSS
- Library perspectives regarding participation in Portico and/or
CLOCKSS
- Challenges caused by the growing number of titles moving between
publishers - i.e., Project Transfer.
- Collaboration between library and laboratory in scientific data
preservation
- Role of the institutional repository in digital preservation
AUTHOR DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION is March 28, 2008. If you are interested
in submitting, but would like to discuss the topic with one of the
co-organizers, please contact one or both of us.
