TITLE:          Life Sciences Librarian

Environment: The Charles E. White Memorial (Chemistry) Library
is a branch of the UM Libraries housed in the Chemistry
Building and is the central location for print and electronic
materials that support study and research in chemistry,
biochemistry, cell biology, enzymology, immunology,
microbiology, and molecular genetics.  For specific

Nature of Work: Based in the White Chemistry Library under the
direction of the Team Leader of the Life Sciences/Chemistry
Team and within the collaborative, team-based learning
environment of University of Maryland Libraries, the Life
Sciences Librarian provides in-depth reference, instruction,
and collection management services for faculty and students in
the College of Chemical and Life Sciences; serves as liaison
to the Department of Cell Biology & Molecular Genetics (CBMG),
supporting information literacy efforts and faculty research;
 develops and manages electronic and print collections for
CBMG; collaborates with other subject librarians and faculty
members to evaluate, maintain, and develop collections;
participates in planning, assessment, and evaluation of
services, collections, and technologies;  provides reference
services at White Chemistry Library and also at McKeldin
Library, as needed; responsible for library operations in the
absence of the branch library head;  participates in an
established instructional program with other librarians;
promotes services available through the libraries; facilitates
communication with campus community about library and
information issues; serves on Libraries’ and university
committees and groups as appropriate.

Qualifications and Experience: Required: ALA-accredited
master’s degree in Library or Information Science AND/OR
post-baccalaureate degree in the physical or life sciences. 
Subject background in biochemistry, molecular biology,
microbiology, chemistry, biotechnology, or related discipline,
demonstrated through academic degrees, course work,
publications, or substantive experience.  Experience providing
reference and instructional services and/or collection
development and management in an academic, special, or science
library serving similar clientele.  Understanding of current
and emerging trends in the disciplines specified above and
familiarity with electronic resources, information
technologies, and collection management. Demonstrated
abilities to work effectively and creatively with library
staff and others and to work well and proactively with both
university students and faculty, in a dynamic, rapidly
changing environment. Excellent oral and written communication
skills. Able to meet promotion and permanent status
requirements.  Preferred: Professional library or information
retrieval experience.  Advanced degree in biochemistry,
molecular biology, microbiology, chemistry, biotechnology, or
related discipline. Experience working in a team-based work
environment.

Position is appointed to Librarian Faculty Ranks as
established by the University System of Maryland Board of
Regents.  Rank at appointment is based on the successful
