Greetings SIG/STI!

As the ASEE Engineering Libraries Division liaison to ASIST SIG/STI, I am
forwarding on the following to you from Mel DeSart, the Chair of the ELD
Scholarly Communication Committee.

=============

The Engineering Libraries Division (ELD) of the American Society for
Engineering Education (ASEE) recently formed a Scholarly Communication
Committee. The ELD membership was recently updated on the current
activities of this committee. We thought that perhaps a less-detailed
synopsis might be of interest to other related organizations.

The Committee's new web page is at http://eld.lib.ucdavis.edu/scc.php.

If you'd like to send e-mail to the entire committee, please send it to
eld-pl at u.washington.edu.

Five subgroups will be working on a variety of projects, with each subgroup
having a coordinator. If you have questions or comments about the
activities of a particular subgroup, please send a note to that group's
coordinator. Members of the Committee and of each subgroup can be found at
the Web page above.

Subgroup projects are:

- Organization of a session for next summer's ASEE conference. This group
already has secured a featured speaker for the conference session, and is
working on securing three people who will act as responders/reactors to the
main speaker's talk.

- The Punch List of Best Practices for Electronic Resources
(http://eld.lib.ucdavis.edu/punchlist/PunchlistRevision2005.pdf). This
group will be updating the Punch List as needed, as well as promoting it to
publishers and other library groups. An ACRL/STS-sponsored session at ALA
Midwinter will focus on the PL. Feedback from that session will be
provided to this subgroup for their consideration and potential action.

- An annual review of scholarly communication-related activities in
engineering. This group will be gathering info on SC-related activities in
engineering, not just in the engineering library world.

- Compilation of a list of copy/distribution/archival rights offered to
authors by engineering publishers. A draft list of publishers has been
drawn up, as has a draft contact document and a draft spreadsheet for the
information the group will be trying to glean from each publisher. This is
related to the Sherpa project (http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/romeo.php) but will
be specific to publishers with content in engineering.

- Set up of an engineering scholarly communication blog. In fact, the blog
is now up at http://eldsc.library.cornell.edu/. You are all invited and
encouraged to begin reading and posting relevant content.

If you have general questions or comments about the work of the ELD SC
Committee, please feel free to send that info either to the Committee
e-list (eld-pl at u.washington.edu) or to me (desart at u.washington.edu).
