Bonnie Carroll and Gail Hodge will be at the ASIST Conference in Charlotte to 
conduct interviews for the following position. Interested persons can contact 
either Bonnie or Gail through the Westin Hotel or the ASIST Placement Office. 
 Gail will attend the full conference.  Bonnie will attend Monday through 
late Tuesday.
 

DIGITAL LIBRARIAN/ CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE FOR
BIODIVERSITY AND ECOSYSTEMS
 
Information International Associates, Inc. (IIa) is interviewing for a 
challenging, full time position to be located in Reston, VA.  A Senior 
Librarian/Information Scientist is needed to help build the next generation of the National 
Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII). The NBII is an internet-based, 
public/private partnership for making biodiversity and ecosystems information 
available for effective science and education decision-making.
 
The position will provide “cyber” library and information science expertise 
to the NBII Team and will be a key player in the intersection of content, 
technology, and user requirements.  It will help build content, respond to user 
requirements, and build the knowledge organization including 
selection/implementation of content standards and conduct user testing.  Personal initiative and 
expertise will be valued and used to build and implement strategic directions.
 
Qualifications (Required):
 
Ø       MLS with computer or information science expertise and experience 
Ø       Minimum of 5 years’ experience, preferably building electronic 
libraries in cyberspace or a related context
Ø       Understanding of digital formats, conversion alternatives, metadata 
standards
Ø       Knowledge of access and navigation tools and approaches and 
institutional repository and digital preservation issues
Ø       Experience with digitization and multi-media/non-text formats 
Ø       Must work well in teams and with a variety of people and cultures
Ø       Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ø       Excellent analytical skills
Ø       Self motivated, high energy, and ability to multi-task
Ø       Available to travel domestically and internationally.
 
Qualifications (Desirable):  
Ø       Experience working with  scientific communities 
Ø       Biodiversity / Biology / Ecology / Conservation Biology background 
Ø       Computer Science / GIS / ESRI experience
The position is a great opportunity for exposure to national and 
international policy and technology issues, as well as involvement in federal agency and 
international programs. 
 
Position responsibilities and duties may include: 
 
Ø       Electronic acquisition of relevant content 
Ø       Conducting inventories of the information tools and standards used by 
biologists to manage information 
Ø       Conducting research on advanced methodologies and tools to improve 
current information systems 
Ø       Development of website areas for the NBII
Ø       Creative information scouting and acquisitions management activities 
Ø       Building partnership relationships with other organizations 
(governmental, non-profit, conservation, community groups, etc.) 
Ø       Standardizing and providing information content on national plans, 
priorities, spatial and temporal information on the components of biological 
diversity 
Ø       Investigating  new ways to retrieve relevant information content from 
disciplines outside the standard realm of biological and information sciences
 
Salary is negotiable commensurate with experience and qualifications.
