From herrmannovad at ornl.gov Wed Jan 3 11:08:34 2018 From: herrmannovad at ornl.gov (Herrmannova, Drahomira) Date: Wed, 3 Jan 2018 16:08:34 +0000 Subject: [Sigmetrics] LREC 2018: 7th International Workshop on Mining Scientific Publications (WOSP 2018) | Second Call for Papers Message-ID: <1938CB32-DF9A-430B-8C06-D8D31C336066@ornl.gov> Dear all, You are invited to participate in the upcoming 7th International Workshop on Mining Scientific Publications (WOSP 2018) to be held in conjunction with the 2018 Language Resources and Evaluation Conference (LREC 2018) on May 7, 2018 in Miyazaki, Japan. The submission deadline is Wednesday, March 7, 2018. Call for papers: Workshop: May 7, 2018 ? Miyazaki, Japan Workshop page: https://wosp.core.ac.uk/lrec2018/ Conference page: http://lrec2018.lrec-conf.org/en/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/wospworkshop 1. INTRODUCTION The entire body of research literature is currently estimated at 100-150 million publications with an annual increase of around 1.5 million. Research literature constitutes the most complete representation of knowledge we have assembled as human species. It enables us to develop cures to diseases, solve difficult engineering problems and answer many of the world?s challenges we are facing today. Systematically reading and analysing the full body of knowledge is now beyond the capacities of any human being. Consequently, it is important to better understand how we can leverage Natural Language Processing/Text Mining techniques to aid knowledge creation and improve the process by which research is being done. This workshop aims to bring together people from different backgrounds who: (a) have experience with analysing and mining databases of scientific publications, (b) develop systems that enable such analysis and mining of scientific databases (especially those who publication databases) or (c) who develop novel technologies that improve the way research is being done. 2. TOPICS The topics of the workshop will be organised around the following themes: 1. The whole ecosystem of infrastructures including repositories, aggregators, text-and data-mining facilities, impact monitoring tools, datasets, services and APIs that enable analysis of large volumes of scientific publications. 2. Semantic enrichment of scientific publications by means of text and data mining. 3. Analysis of large databases of scientific publications to identify research trends, high impact and improve access to research content. 3. SPECIAL OPEN PUBLICATIONS DATASET TRACK This year we would like to invite the workshop participants to make use of the CORE publications dataset containing over 8 million full texts of research papers from a wide variety of research areas. The dataset contains not only full-texts, but also an enriched version of publications? metadata. This dataset provides a framework for developing and testing methods and tools addressing the workshop topics. The use of this dataset is not mandatory; however, it is encouraged. The dataset is available through the CORE portal: http://core.ac.uk/intro/data_dumps In addition to offering the dataset we are also considering running a shared task involving the use of the OpenMinTeD infrastructure for mining scientific papers. 4. SUBMISSION FORMAT We invite submissions related to the workshop?s topics. Long papers should not exceed 8 pages and short papers should not exceed 4 pages of the LREC style. Furthermore, we welcome demo presentations of systems or methods. A demonstration submission should consist of a maximum two-page description of the system, method or tool to be demonstrated. All submissions will be uploaded to the START system for a peer-review. The LREC proceedings template can be found on the LREC website: http://lrec2018.lrec-conf.org/en/submission/authors-kit/. Papers should be submitted using the START system at https://www.softconf.com/lrec2018/WOSP/. 5. IMPORTANT DATES Wednesday, March 7, 11:59 (Hawaii time) -- Submission deadline Saturday, April 7 -- Notification of acceptance Saturday, April 21 -- Camera-ready Monday, May 7 -- Workshop The dates are at this stage indicative only and can change. 6. The seminar in which Henk Moed will present the key ideas of the book will take place on: FRIDAY 19 JANUARY 2018 at 15 o?clock in the Common Room at CWTS, Willem Einthoven Building Kolffpad 1 2333 BN Leiden SUMMARY OF THE BOOK: Moed, H.F. (2017). Applied Evaluative Informetrics. Springer, ISBN 978-3-319-60521-0 (hard cover); 978-3-319-60522-7 (E-Book), DOI 10.1007/978-3-319-60522-7, XXI + 312 pp. This book presents an introduction to the field of applied evaluative informetrics, dealing with the use of bibliometric or informetric indicators in research assessment. It sketches the field?s history, recent achievements, and its potential and limits. The book dedicates special attention to the application context of quantitative research assessment. It describes research assessment as an evaluation science, and distinguishes various assessment models, in which the domain of informetrics and the policy sphere are disentangled analytically. It illustrates how external, non-informetric factors influence indicator development, and how the policy context impacts the setup of an assessment process. It also clarifies common misunderstandings in the interpretation of some often used statistics. Addressing the way forward, the book expresses the author?s critical views on a series of fundamental problems in the current use of research performance indicators in research assessment. Highlighting the potential of informetric techniques, a series of new features is proposed that could be implemented in future assessment processes. It sketches a perspective on altmetrics and proposes new lines in longer term, strategic indicator research. It is written for interested scholars from all domains of science and scholarship, and especially for all those subjected to research assessment, research students at advanced master and PhD level, research managers, funders and science policy officials, and to practitioners and students in the field. SHORT BIOGRAPHY OF HENK MOED Between 1981 and 2010 Henk F. Moed was a senior staff member at the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) at Leiden University. During 2010-2014 he was a senior scientific advisor at Elsevier, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He obtained a Ph.D. degree in Science Studies at the University of Leiden in 1989. He has been active in numerous research topics, including: the creation of bibliometric databases from raw data from Thomson Scientific?s Web of Science and Elsevier?s Scopus; analysis of inaccuracies in citation matching; assessment of the potentialities and pitfalls of journal impact factors; the development and application of science indicators for the measurement of research performance in the basic natural- and life sciences; the use of bibliometric indicators as a tool to assess peer review procedures; the development and application of performance indicators in social sciences and humanities; studies of the effects of ?Open Access? upon research impact and studies of patterns in ?usage? (downloading) behaviour of users of electronic scientific publication warehouses; studies of the effects of the use of bibliometric indicators upon scientific authors and journal publishers; development of a new journal impact measure (SNIP); the relationship between full text downloads and citations; bibliometric studies of international scientific migration and collaboration; comparisons of Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar; multi-dimensional assessment of research impact; the potential of altmetrics; ontology-based bibliometric data management. He published over 100 research articles in international, peer reviewed journals, was program chair of numerous international conferences in the field, and is editorial board member of several journals in his field. He is a winner of the Derek de Solla Price Award in 1999. He edited in 2004, jointly with W. Glanzel and U. Schmoch, a Handbook on Quantitative Science and Technology Research (Kluwer, 800 pp), and published in 2005 a monograph, Citation Analysis in Research Evaluation (Springer, 346 pp.), which is one of the very few textbooks in the field. He is currently an independent scientific advisor, and visiting professor at the Sapienza University of Rome and University of Granada. In September 2017 he published a second monograph with Springer, entitled ?Applied Evaluative Informetrics?, and he is currently editing a second Handbook on S&T indicators (with W. Glanzel, U. Schmoch and M. Thelwall), to be published in 2018. He is program chair of the upcoming conference of the International Society for Scientometrics and Informetrics (ISSI) in 2019 in Rome. The seminar will be concluded over drinks. This option has replaced the earlier filter that only determined OA status at the journal level and thus only had papers from full gold OA journals. The new filter uses oaDOI from ImpactStory and is able to detect much more and at a more granular level (including green, hybrid and 'bronze' OA) Of course it is early days and there are still methodological and other caveats, but it seemed important to assess if this data could inform the OA and scientometrics community on progress, reliably show the various levels of OA by field, country, institution, funder etc. and point at positive examples. All this and more, such as a case study of the Netherlands, diving into the various types of OA using additional (open) data from the oaDOI API, is in our preprint at PeerJPreprints that is now live here: https://doi.org/10.7287/peerj.preprints.3520v1 Of course we shared all the data. We very much value your feedback. Because researchers and policymakers can now obtain these detailed OA data through a unified approach, it seems important to gauge the value and applicability of the new WoS filter. We realize that access to Web of Science is a privilege associated with affiliation with rich, mostly Western, universities. This also means that many of the analyses done here, particularly for non-Western countries and institutions, cannot be repeated or applied by the people directly involved or affected. We applaud oaDOI for their commitment to keeping their API free and are looking forward to collaborative initiatives to make information about research output from various entities openly available and reusable. In the preprint, we also discuss the functionalities and limitations thereof of freely available (not necessarily open) multidisciplinary databases (BASE, Google Scholar and Science Open) for detailed determining of OA levels. kind regards, Bianca Kramer and Jeroen Bosman Utrecht University Library Abstract: Across the world there is growing interest in open access publishing among researchers, institutions, funders and publishers alike. It is assumed that open access levels are growing, but hitherto the exact levels and patterns of open access have been hard to determine and detailed quantitative studies are scarce. Using newly available open access status data from oaDOI in Web of Science we are now able to explore year-on-year open access levels across research fields, languages, countries, institutions, funders and topics, and try to relate the resulting patterns to disciplinary, national and institutional contexts. With data from the oaDOI API we also look at the detailed breakdown of open access by types of gold open access (pure gold, hybrid and bronze), using universities in the Netherlands as an example. There is huge diversity in open access levels on all dimensions, with unexpected levels for e.g. Portuguese as language, Astronomy & Astrophysics as research field, countries like Tanzania, Peru and Latvia, and Zika as topic. We explore methodological issues and offer suggestions to improve conditions for tracking open access status of research output. Finally, we suggest potential future applications for research and policy development. We have shared all data and code openly. As NARCIS, the portal into the Dutch research landscape, is increasingly also harvesting publications, Emil Bode of our research group did an analysis into OA as available in our database. The results are visible here https://www.narcis.nl/metrics/Language/en You will notice, scrolling to the last graphic, that we don?t disclose the individual universities, which has to do with our awareness of the still large range of error margin in these data and our function as information portal. But, we have the data internally, and it would be interesting to do a comparison. We are aware that we only harvest a certain part of the publications (as became visible in a study on another topic with CWTS years ago ( https://pure.knaw.nl/portal/en/publications/seedexpand--a-general-methodology-for-detecting-publication-oeuvres-of-individual-researchers(b74001b4-9390-4aac-bb17-cb0c3423ec8f).html ). NSF-NRT PhD > Fellowship in Complex Networks and Systems > > *NEW DEADLINE: Applications Due January 1, 2018* > > Interdisciplinary Training in Complex Networks and Systems > > Understanding complex networked systems is key to solving some of the > most vexing problems confronting humankind, from discovering how > dynamic brain connections give rise to thoughts and behaviors, to > detecting and preventing the spread of misinformation or unhealthy > behaviors across a population. Graduate training, however, typically > occurs in one of two dimensions: experimental and observational > methods in a specific area such as biology and sociology, or in > general methodologies such as machine learning and data science. > > With more and more students seeking to gain sufficient expertise in > mathematical and computational methods on top of domain-specific > laboratory and social analysis methodologies, a greater demand for > more efficient interdisciplinary training is emerging. The Indiana > University National Science Foundation Research Traineeship > (NRT) addresses this growing need with > an integrated dual PhD program that trains students to be > ?bidisciplinary? in Complex Networks and Systems (CNS) and another > discipline of their choosing from the natural and social sciences. It > will seamlessly integrate traditional education with interdisciplinary > hands-on research in a culture of academic and human diversity. > > The training program capitalizes on the new Indiana University Network > Science Institute (IUNI) . The Institute's 165+ > faculty members will serve in interdisciplinary PhD program committees > to be co-chaired by research mentors from both CNS and the target > empirical domain. Project-driven,?team-based?research at IUNI will > seamlessly integrate academic education with interdisciplinary > hands-on?scientific and industrial research. Trainees will learn to > connect the general-purpose, computational expertise of CNS to the > deep, domain-specific research methodologies of the natural, > behavioral, and social sciences thus bridging the gap between distinct > training cultures.
