CRExplorer uses data from Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics) or Scopus (Elsevier) as input. CRExplorer can be applied for three main objectives: (1) the detection of the knowledge basis (i.e. the origins and historical roots) of research topics, (2) the investigation of influential works published more recently, and (3) the disambiguation of cited references data. We recommend to use the CRExplorer for the disambiguation of cited references data, before they are used in programs such as VOSvierwer (e.g. for bibliographic coupling) or CitNetExplorer. Web of Science and especially Scopus data are concerned by variants of the same cited reference which distort the results of bibliometric analyses. CRExplorer version 1.7.7 was released on June 30, 2017. This version includes the following new features and improvements: * Publications: Users can specify (under "File" - "Settings" - "Import/Export") if CRExplorer should include publications that do not have any cited references. * Settings: Several enhancements in the settings incl. chart layout options (font size, stroke size). The dependencies of altmetrics* altmetrics17 < http://altmetrics.org/altmetrics17/> is part of the altmetrics workshop series organized since 2011 and will take place in conjunction with the 4th Altmetrics Conference (4:AM) < http://altmetricsconference.com/>, at Ryerson University in Toronto on *26 September 2017*. This year?s workshop will focus on the dependencies of altmetrics. Altmetrics are heavily shaped, if not completely driven, by data availability, technical affordances of underlying platforms and data providers. Against this background, the altmetrics17 workshop will have a special focus on the dependencies of altmetrics and their potential effects on altmetric research, the role of altmetrics in research evaluation and the effects on scholarly communication in general. The workshop particularly invites contributions that address the workshop?s theme directly or indirectly, analyze effects of the dependencies, and propose solutions and alternative frameworks in which to study altmetrics. *Call for contributions* We are soliciting empirical and theoretical contributions for short presentations and as a basis for discussions, which will be the main focus of the altmetrics17 workshop. Submissions can focus on empirical analyses, novel theoretical frameworks, original datasets or represent a position paper. The goal of the workshop is to discuss, exchange and foster collaboration on altmetrics between researchers and practitioners. Contributions will be curated by the altmetrics17 committee for their relevance and technical soundness and selected for short presentations. *How to submit* Please provide an extended abstract (max 1,000 words) presenting your altmetrics research contribution and highlighting particular issues you would like to discuss with other workshop participants. Abstracts need to be submitted via EasyChair < https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=altmetrics17> by *31 July 2017*. Please include a link to any relevant artifact (e.g., a dataset, plots, slidedeck) you wish to present and discuss, after archiving it via an appropriate repository (e.g., Dryad, figshare, GitHub, SlideShare, etc.). It is organized by the Department of Information Management of Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey. The main theme of the Symposium is ?Post-truth and Information Management?. The Oxford Dictionary?s selection of the term ?Post-truth? as the word of the year in 2016 puts forward the need of questioning the accuracy of the information. Post-truth is defined as ?relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief? and can be effective in information dissemination processes, information seeking behaviors of individuals, production and use of information. Information management discipline has a very important function in terms of raising awareness of individuals for distinguishing the fake information and facts. For this reason, it is extremely important that the concept of ?Post-truth? and its influences be discussed within the framework of the Information Management discipline and by its professionals. CONTRIBUTIONS Contributions can be theoretical as well as technical and practical. Informative case studies are also welcome. Contributions are not limited with the main theme: all types of papers, posters and presentations on information management in general are also welcome. The audience will be information professionals, data librarians, data curators, data managers, knowledge managers, researchers, information scientists, data scientists and computer engineers, among others. We accept extended abstracts (no less than 750 words) for full papers; short communications, Research in Progress reports, and posters on all aspects of Post-truth and also information management. Extended abstracts for student papers and posters are also welcome. Extended abstracts of PhD students to present the interim findings of their ongoing research will also be considered. Please use the template available on the Symposium web site soon to prepare your contributions and send them to us using the Conference Management Software (openconf) by 15 December, 2017. We also encourage session proposals. The coordinator of a special session will be responsible for the selection of papers (4-6 papers) and will chair the session. For session coordinators, registration fee will be waived. Accepted extended abstracts and proposals will appear in the ?Book of Abstracts? to be published prior to the Symposium. Accepted extended abstracts may be developed as full papers. A short list of papers will be selected so that the revised and extended versions of these papers and posters will appear in the proceedings book. Please consider running for the Deputy Director position. The SIG Steering Committee is looking for past officers who value the SIG community and want to lead its most effective work. The position is extremely well supported; Deputy Directors spend a year learning the ropes from the current Director followed by their own year as Director. The Past Director provides advice and assistance so that everyone the team has colleagues helping in each responsibility. We currently have three working groups investigating potential growth in SIG officer training, policy development, and awards. During the Deputy Director's 3-year participation in SIG administration, these and other initiatives will be reviewed, completed, and - if appropriate - postponed. Working with the Director and Past Director, the Deputy Director will develop and manage services of value to all SIGs. Please consider running for this vital position. We need nominees with dedication to all SIGs, creativity to help grow SIGs' plans, ability to represent the SIG community within the full ASIS&T community, and ability to work effectively with the other two Directors. The dependencies of altmetrics altmetrics17 is part of the altmetrics workshop series organized since 2011 and will take place in conjunction with the 4th Altmetrics Conference (4:AM), at Ryerson University in Toronto on 26 September 2017. This year's workshop will focus on the dependencies of altmetrics. The workshop particularly invites contributions that address the workshop's theme directly or indirectly, analyze effects of the dependencies, and propose solutions and alternative frameworks in which to study altmetrics. Call for contributions We are soliciting empirical and theoretical contributions for short presentations and as a basis for discussions, which will be the main focus of the altmetrics17 workshop. How to submit Please provide an extended abstract (max 1,000 words) presenting your altmetrics research contribution and highlighting particular issues you would like to discuss with other workshop participants. Abstracts need to be submitted via EasyChair by 7 August 2017. Please include a link to any relevant artifact (e.g., a dataset, plots, slidedeck) you wish to present and discuss, after archiving it via an appropriate repository (e.g., Dryad, figshare, GitHub, SlideShare, etc.). More information can be found on the altmetrics17 website and on Twitter. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stefanie Haustein Assistant Professor | Professeure adjointe School of Information Studies | ?cole des sciences de l'information University of Ottawa | Universit? d'Ottawa e-mail: stefanie.haustein at uottawa.ca web: stefaniehaustein.com | arts.uottawa.ca/esi phone: 613-562-5800 (1986) Twitter: @stefhaustein -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Field- and time-normalization of citation impact is the standard method in bibliometrics. Since citation rates for journal papers differ substantially across publication years and Journal of Economic Literature (JEL) classification codes, citation rates should be normalized for the comparison of papers across different time periods and economic subfields. Without normalization, both factors that are independent of research quality bias the results of citation analyses. We introduce two normalized indicators in economics, which are the most important indicators in bibliometrics: (1) the mean normalized citation score (MNCS) compares the citation impact of a focal paper with the mean impact of similar papers published in the same economic subfield and publication year. (2) PPtop 50% is the share of papers that belong to the above-average half in a certain subfield and time period. Since the MNCS is based on arithmetic averages despite skewed citation distributions, we recommend using PPtop 50% for fair comparisons of entities in economics (e.g. researchers, institutions, or countries). In this study, we apply the method to 294 journals (including normalized scores for 192,524 papers) by assigning them to four citation impact classes and identifying 33 outstandingly cited economics journals. Message-ID: <15d8ecec52c-7f68-2fd86@webprd-m86.mail.aol.com> Dear colleagues, are results from information services good enough for applications in informetrics and scientometrics? Concerning the results of a study by Dorsch, they are not. What's better for use in informetrics and scientometrics? Authors' personal lists of publications or Web of Science (WoS), Scopus or any other bibliographic information service? Isabelle Dorsch has introduced a newly interpretated indicator in informetrics: the relative visibility of an author in different scientific databases. (By the way, I was one of Isabella's "victims" as my publication list was one of her case studies.) Best, Wolfgang G.
