I thank the authors for their efforts. However, I wish to take the following viewpoint. Altruism or selflessness is the principle or practice of concern for the welfare of others. In theory, this could include giving alms. Altruism does not consider relationships. Hence, I prefer using the terms "Intangible Outcomes" and "Tangible Outcomes" of any research effort. How do we measure "Intangibles" ? Is "Insight" an Intangible ? Your thoughts... The launch event, which takes place in May 2017, will feature lively discussions around the future of research assessment. All are invited to attend. In 2015 The Metric Tide concluded that "peer review, despite its flaws and limitations, continues to command widespread support across disciplines" and that "metrics should support, not supplant, expert judgement." In an age of galloping technological change and increasing pressure on research funding, the debate will focus on whether this conclusion remains valid. High-profile speakers who will debate this conclusion include: * Dr Liz Allen, Faculty 1000 * Prof Eleonora Belfiore, Loughborough University * Prof Paul Edwards, University of Birmingham * Prof Anne-Wil Harzing, Middlesex University * Dr Thed van Leeuwen, Leiden University * Prof Loet Leyedsdorff, University of Amsterdam * Prof John Mingers, University of Kent The event takes place from 10:00 to 16:00 on Tuesday 30 May 2017, and will take place in The Sibson Building, the new state-of-the-art academic home for Kent Business School on the Canterbury campus. The event is free to attend and includes lunch and refreshments. Research Evaluation in the Social Sciences and Humanities University of Antwerp, Campus Middelheim, Antwerp, Belgium 6?7 July 2017 www.uantwerpen.be/ressh2017 The EvalHum Initiative is pleased to open the call for papers for its second international conference on Research Evaluation in the Social Sciences and the Humanities (RESSH), to be held at the University of Antwerp, Belgium, on the 6th and 7th of July 2017. This conference follows the highly successful first conference that was held in Rennes, France, in June 2015. The aim of this event is to bring together a wide range of researchers and stakeholders interested in questions of research evaluation and the societal impact of the social sciences and the humanities (SSH). Conference themes The development of research evaluation protocols and performance-based funding systems is rooted in policy decisions aiming to improve research and the research system as a whole. However, the implementation of such policies has attracted a great deal of criticism, especially from the SSH. The purpose of the RESSH conference is to explore whether evaluation can be useful to SSH researchers, whether it seeks to improve the quality and relevance of research or whether it is simply a management tool for the allocation of funds or imposition of policy. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to): * Evaluation of societal relevance of SSH research * Notions of quality in SSH research * Diversity in SSH research and its relation to assessment * Bibliometric indicators for the SSH * Alternative metrics of SSH research impact * Data sources on SSH research output * Evaluation practices in SSH * Role of evaluation in knowledge production processes * Effects of evaluation and performance-based funding on SSH research and researchers * Peer review in the SSH * Open Access for SSH and its potential for assessment of research * The international dimension in SSH research * Characteristics of dissemination channels In each case, authors are expected to explicitly link the topic to evaluation of SSH research. Case studies of specific fields are welcome. Keynote speakers We are happy to announce that Howard D. WHITE (Drexel University) and Askold IVANTCHIK (CNRS, Russian Academy of Sciences, and Moscow State University) will deliver a keynote at RESSH 2017. Conference Organisers EvalHum is an open initiative, aiming at promoting the study of SSH research and increasing its visibility among scholars of other fields and disciplines, the lay public and stakeholders and decision makers. Evaluation appears as an interesting tool to achieve this. EvalHum seeks to break both locked-in and locked-out syndromes affecting the SSH, through bringing together all actors, with an emphasis on research evaluators, but also on the shop floor of the SSH researchers. This update provides an occasion for rethinking the parameter choices. The new maps are significantly different from previous ones, although this may not always be obvious on visual inspection. Since these maps are statistical constructs based on index terms, their quality--as different from utility--can only be controlled discursively. We provide nested maps online and a routine for portfolio overlays and further statistical analysis. We add a new tool for "difference maps" which is illustrated by comparing the portfolios of patents granted to Novartis and MSD in 2016. https://arxiv.org/abs/1702.07481# _____ Loet Leydesdorff Professor, University of Amsterdam Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR) loet at leydesdorff.net ; http://www.leydesdorff.net/ Associate Faculty, SPRU, University of Sussex; Guest Professor Zhejiang Univ., Hangzhou; Visiting Professor, ISTIC, Beijing; Visiting Fellow, Birkbeck, University of London; http://scholar.google.com/citations?user=ych9gNYAAAAJ&hl=en -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Attached please find the first mail exchange I had with Eugene Garfield way back in 2000. I can find out if any documentation on the event honoring Eugene Garfield is now available with the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation, Chennai. I am on the SIGMETRICS mailing list and used to find some of his posts very useful. Eugene Garfield has named only the following three reference motivators as negative factors. Criticizing previous work Disclaiming work or ideas of others (negative claims) Disputing priority claims of others (negative homage) He was a visionary and pioneer in the field.
